Really worried I have cancer ENT not really listening

Hello, I feel really horrible for posting in here as I haven't had any kind of diagnosis yet but have been reading threads of everyone being so kind so thought Id give it a go.

I contstantly get tonsillitis and in December 2020 noticed another flare up and was a sort of here we go again situation. Whilst looking at them I noticed a lump/bump/mark on the back of my throat which hadn't been there before. Speak to my GP who says he's going to refer me to ENT to have a proper look at my tonsils to see if they need taking out and mention the lump to the ENT so they can assess that.

The tonsillitis goes and I forget about the mark until it's time for the consultation (due to Covid they've deceided that this can be done over the phone) the ENT is quite abrupt and I explain the tonsillitis and he decides they need taking out and then pretty much goes to end the call until I mention the lump he then just tells me I'm being stupid if it was cancer I'd be dead. He then forgets to hang up and I hear him laughing at me with the nurse before he realises and hangs up. I then sort of worry myself by consulting Dr Google, as he was no help, who says this could be cancer.

I forget about it until a few weeks later in feb 2021 when I get another flare up of my tonsils and see the lump still present and go back to the GP and have a big break down and cry about everything and how horrible my experience with the ENT was and explain I think there's a more serious cause. The GP seemed very angry for me due to the unprofessionalism and the fact he stated it needed to be an in clinic assessment and that was ignored so has re referred me with a complaint.

My issue now is my symtoms seems to be getting worse as the weeks go on I've still got this on the back of my throat, swollen tonsils, sore/dry throat, swelling/lump in my right hand side of my neck (feels like lymph nodes or thyroid could be swollen), my jaw feels tight I'm getting really short of breath and my ear keeps ringing/hurting. All this with no fever  I'm sick of pestering my GP and feel a nuisance so end up back with Dr Google who then points me back to cancer. These symtoms have gone on for nearly 3 weeks now So just decided to speak to my GP which I did on Friday explained my fears and he basically just said we need to wait for the ENT.

I feel like due to my complaint I've been pushed right to the back of the queue which is now even longer due to Covid and I'm making myself ill with anxiety I'm struggling to eat/sleep/concentrate because the fact I have cancer is just playing on my mind constantly.

suppose I'm writing to see if anyone has any idea on how I can get the ENT to take me seriously when we finally meet. Or hopefully if anyone's had similar symtoms to myself and could point me in a direction, not expecting a doctors diagnosis but any idea would really help.

  • Hi Joshc446,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear that you're having difficulties getting answers and that the specialist didn't seem to take you seriously.

As you have another referral to see the specialist, the only thing to really do is wait for that. I don't think the complaint will affect anything in terms of waiting times - it's just unfortunate the waiting times are unusually long at the moment.

Ahead of the appointment, I'd suggest writing things down that you want to say - for example the symptoms you've noticed, when you noticed them, and any changes. It's important to get some answers about what's going on so there's nothing wrong with pushing for this.

If you still don't feel satisfied afterwards, you can ask for a second opinion.

In the meantime, try to avoid looking things up on Google as this is rarely helpful or relevant and it often only increases worry.

I hope you're able to find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
