Smear test results very worried

Hello everyone,

I just got my first cervical screening results today and I have high risk HPV and abnormal cells, I will have to go for a colposcopy.

I am only 24 and been vaccinated for HPV in school so it was not the results I was expecting and it has thrown me into a tizzy.

Would just like some advice on what this now means for me and if this means I could potentially have cervical cancer. Any chat on what happens next would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Hollyjennifer96,

There are different types of HPV and it's not uncommon to have it. We also have some information on the colposcopy test here, which I hope will help you feel more prepared and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Please try not to worry and I hope your colonoscopy goes ok,

  • Hi Holly,

I've had three friends who around your age had a similar thing inthat they all came back as HPV positive and spent weeks worrying waiting on colposcopy only for the results to all be fine after the colposcopy. Hope it helps ease your mind a little, the anxiety waiting is horrible.

  • Hello Holly,

I hope you are ok, I know it's been a long time since posting but I was just hoping to find out the outcome?

  • Hello,

I was on a waiting list for a colposcopy for many months so decided to pay for one privately for peace of mind. It wasn't the most pleasant thing but the nurses were lovely and supportive. I had CIN 1 Dyskarosis which was removed by biopsy and I was put on smear tests every 6 months to monitor.

2 weeks ago after my last smear I got the all clear from HPV and no cell changes and put on yearly smears, which I was very relieved about.

I also only got the call a year later for my NHS colposcopy which I had to cancel, very long waiting list after covid!
