Postmenopausal continuous bleeding

Hi

I am 53 and have not had periods for 3 years.

I started noticing blood when I went to the loo 5 months ago and went straight to my GP. It was a phone consult only due to Covid and thought to be a UTI. This bleeding came and went for 2 months and in that time urine samples were taken with some coming back clear and some showing infection but antibiotics made no difference. I was referred for a bladder cystoscopy in December which only showed some cystitis.

Bleeding continued and became daily in January so at last the GP saw me in person and had a look. She noticed that the bleeding was coming from my womb and referred me on the 2 week pathway for a gynae consultation for diagnostic scan etc. That was on 26 January and my appointment was meant to be tomorrow. My appointment has just been cancelled till 5 March so my 2 week urgent referral is now taking 6 weeks almost! I am bleeding every day although not heavily and mostly when I go for a pee. I have abdominal pain which is like period pain. I am convinced I must have ovarian or womb cancer as the bleeding has been going on for 5 months and been daily for the past month.

I am very scared as I feel it could be growing and spreading all these months. I am also very overweight so worry that if I have got cancer they may not want to do a hysterectomy. I am in a state of anxiety every day and would welcome any comments if anyone has similar symptoms - especially if they turned out not to be cancer. My smear test was clear.

Thank you

  • Hello Jliz16

I'm sorry to hear about the health concerns you've been dealing with over the past few months. It sounds like it's been a difficult time for you.

I think most of our members here will understand how worrying this period of uncertainty whilst waiting for tests can be and even more so with your appointment having been rearranged at the 11th hour. If you were able to attend at short notice then it may be worth contacting the hospital to ask if they keep a cancellation list.

It can sometimes help to talk things through with someone and I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat with one of our nurses. I'm sure they would be happy to give you some support and information ahead of your appointment. If you'd like to speak to them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Jenn

I actually had a phone call from the hospital yesterday saying I could be seen yesterday morning so I went straight in. I had a scan and biopsy taken. The consultant didn't tell me a lot despite me asking questions and seemed quite cagey so I am convinced it is cancer.

He said my lining was 10mm and it could be cancer but need to wait for biopsy results in 2 or 3 weeks. He also said it may be hyperplasia or polyps but surely if it was polyps they would have been seen on the scan.

I am very scared and can't focus on anything. I just keep crying. Convinced I have cancer and scared to death.
