Would a Cancer diagnosis be given over the phone?

Hi there

After a biopsy last Monday and being told it was cancerous, but radiotherapy would sort it out, my husband was given an appointment for a face to face appt for the definitive results of the biopsy and subsequent CT scan.

This has been changed to a phone appt - the day is the same.

I'm thinking it will be positive, perhaps not cancer?  Would he get a cancer diagnosis over the phone?

  • Hi. I was given both mine face to face. The initial diagnosis after the first biopsy and also face to face for the results of my lymph node biopsy. Both were cancer.

My thoughts would be bad news face to face always with cancer.

    A phone consultation maybe not?

Hope all goes well for you.

  • I think the telephone appointments are due to Covid restrictions at the moment. I understand that they are using telephones wherever possible regardless of good or bad news.
Hoping for good news in your case x

  • Hi

I am very sorry to learn that you're waiting for results, from experience I know this is a horrible time.

I had both, on New Years Eve 2020 I had a very apologetic phone call from ENT confirming cancer.  My wife and I were then invited to a face to face with ENT and a Macmillan cancer nurse.

To be honest we were glad of the phone call as the sooner we had the diagnosis the better.  It also gave us time to think of any questions we may have for the face to face, which in turn made the face to face a better use of time.   The call also came out of the blue, it hadn't been arranged.

I hope this helps.   Good luck moving forward.

  • Sorry to hear the news and also sorry to say that my confirmation of prostate cancer was by telephone, I was told it was due to Covid and also was not given any details on that phone call of what was going to happen next.  i.e. no details of treatment or when it would start. I subsequently paid for 2 private appointments to obtain further information over the next 2 to 3 weeks but both of these ended up as phone calls.

  • Thank you.

Unfortunately it was a cancer diagnosis.  Waiting to see oncologist for treatment plan, luckily we are in an area where treatment is going ahead.

  • Very sorry to hear this. Pleased that you are in area where hopefully things happen quickly for you - I found the weeks waiting for it to happen the worst part. Best Wishes going forward

  • So sorry to hear this how are you doing what have u been diagnosed with I'm currently waiting for results phone call on Wednesday was yours given over the phone thoughts and prayers your way xxx

  • Hi there

We we're given the initial results over the phone, then my husband was given a face to face appointment with an oncologist.

His initial diagnosis was a very early cancer, but he was incredibly unlucky - and it is very very rare, that his cancer was unbelievably aggressive and spread very quickly to all parts of his body and he passed away in November of last year.

I know that sounds incredibly scary, but please believe me it was also incredibly rare and even shocked the oncologists at the speed and ferocious of how it spread.

I am sending you all the positive thoughts, luck and live in the world that should you get a diagnosis that you will be back on here very soon as one of the survivors ️

  • Hey did everything go okay for you on Wednesday - I have a call next Thursday to find out my biopsy results. Hope you are okay xx
