Melanoma

Hi,

I had a mole removed a couple of weeks ago. The doctor at the time said he didn't think it looked like anything suspicious, and if it was nothing then I wouldn't hear anything back. I received a letter today saying I need to come back in a months time regarding the biopsy. There were no other details given but I was told to bring someone with me.

Does this mean they are going to tell me it's a melanoma? Is there any other situation where they may want me to come back?

thanks for any help!

  • Hi,

Yes there is another situation where you can be called back. It's possible it could be a dysplastic (atypical) mole. These are benign but they look dodgy. The cells have already started to change &, if left in situ, will eventually become cancerous. So they like to ensure that they've completely removed them with a safe margin of tissue so there is no further problem in the future. They also do follow up check ups for about a year to ensure there are no other dodgy moles.

So I hope that this is why you are being called back but don't panic if it isn't. Melanoma, especially when caught early, is treatable these days. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
