Lump in breast and swollen lymph nodes

Hi All,

I feel like I really need someone to talk to. I discovered a raised fairly solid little lump under my arm during the first week of February. I contacted the doctor the following day who prescribed antibiotics. That evening I came out with flu like symptoms so I was hopeful that it was a nasty bug that caused what was presumably the lymph node to swell. I had a rough week and more lymph nodes started to appear (again all under the arm - right side). Slowly they went down and others appeared. I got over the worst of the bug and started to feel a bit better but more lymph nodes were popping up and then I felt a lump in my breast. I immediately got an appointment with the GP who ordered blood tests which I had today, and she has also made me a referral for the breast clinic. This evening I've found another lump which has appeared under my collarbone. I'm going out of my mind with worry (which may be silly but being a mum to an 8 year old boy I can't help but think the worse). I'm 37 years old. I keep getting heart palpitations and my asthma is bad - I think this could be anxiety but then worry it is to do with whatever is going on. If it was breast cancer can the lymph nodes all pop up so quickly? They are fairly tender and painful. The breast lump is uncomfortable too. The pain goes through the breast, under the arm and down part of the arm. The two week wait which I know is standard feels like an eternity.

  • Hi Hezzy,

I'm really not sure about the swollen lymph nodes but I do believe if it was breast cancer then they would swell long after you discovered your breast lump.

I am 35 and also have an 8 year old. I went to the gp in December with a breast lump I've had for years but it had grown and was getting painful and the doc found another 3 lumps. She referred me to the breast clinic but I had to wait 4 weeks for appointment due to a backlog with covid. When I got there I had an ultrasound and they wanted to biopsy the big lump plus a smaller one which feels different to the others. Got my results 2 weeks ago and the large movable lump is a harmless fibroadenoma and can stay, but the smaller one is a papillary lesion and has to come out.

That sent my mind into overdrive and I am dreading this procedure. Still not had an appointment through, I agree with you it's the waiting that is torture. So last night I found another lump between my breasts, ( I have small breasts and am thin so easy to feel), this is a small movable one right on the chest bone, if that makes sense. Then noticed another 2 on the other side. So altogether now I seem to have about 11 breast lumps.

Try keep yourself busy with your wee one, everyone on here understands exactly how you are feeling right now. And hopefully we both get our appointments soon

Leave me a message anytime you need a chat x

  • Hi Kelsi,

Sorry to hear that you have the dreaded wait ahead of you too. I really hope that the test results turn out to all be ok. I think the wait is probably worse as you just don't know where you stand.

I had night sweats for the first time last night and have lost 2kg so I made a call to the doctor. They're now concerned about the possibility of Lymphoma so they're referring me for a CT scan now (she said that would hopefully be a two week wait). The breast clinic appointment has come through as is on 2nd March.

Sending you my best wishes x

  • Your doing the right thing by getting all this checked, and hopefully you will be seen within the 2 weeks. Good luck with everything and keep us posted x
