Hi,

After being post menopausal for 15 years I started to bleed quite heavily about 3 weeks ago, which stopped after 9 days, but prior to stopping the bleed went from bright red, to black/brown (with an unpleasant odour): I also had considerable stomach and backache pain.  I was put on a fast track appointment to see a Consultant and, as a result, I had a hysteroscopy and D&C under general anaesthetic yesterday morning.  The initial scan showed my endometrium had a thickening of 9mm - yet the hospital notes I bought home with we showed the thickening was only showing on one side of the endometrium. They've taken a tissue sample and now got to play the waiting game for 10/14 days. Fingers crossed that all is okay. (p.s. I have been on a low dose HRT for about 17 years, but stopped taken them when I started bleeding).

    Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read of the difficulties you've been having recently - it sounds like a lot to go through and I'm sure a fair bit of worry too. I know the waiting for results or further info is difficult so I hope you find out more about this sooner rather than later.

    Hopefully you'll receive further replies to your post soon, particularly if anyone here has any similar experience to share.

    Hi Ambrose, I was a bit similar to you, I had an unexpected bleed(15+yrs post menopause in early Dec. Not on hrt though.  Im in Scotland and we don't have a set timescale like in England, which is 2weeks for urgent referral appointment.  I waited until 11th January which sent my head spinning, couldnt sleep or think about anything else.  At the appointment I had a transvaginal Ultrasound, a Hysterectopy, an internal examination and a biopsy was taken from my uterkne wall as its thickened.  I wasnt told size or any more info.  All done within the hour long appointment with no anesthetic or sedation  the doc and nurses just talked all the way through. I couldnt remember most of what he said as it was all quite technical, he was talking about 2 things it could be one of which he can sort by putting a coil in and the other was cancer which would be very bsd for me cause I have lots of other health conditions and medicaton that I really need a lot of good luck to get away with this. and I had to wait for the urgent results which came back after 4 weeks and 4 days, which is the norm up here. The longest wait of my and my husband's lives.  But it was worth the wait as all was clear.  He was surprised but it just shows things can go your way.  Majority of tests are negative.

    If it is something then theres lots of things now to get you healthy again. 

    Keep busy and try and stay calm.  I have found sharing on here to be  a huge help and got me through.  All the very best to you. Jen

    Thank you for sharing your experience with me Jen, and I'm shocked at how you were able to tolerate the biopsy and hysteroscopy being done without any anaesthetic: you must have a far better pain tolerance than myself! I think my brain has remembered the consultant saying 'endometrial cancer' and has immediately thought the worst. Fingers crossed that I'm one of the 85% that have this health issue and it turns out not to be cancer! x

    Hi its not a problem it helps us both.  I guess I just kept talking with the nurses I didnt notice.  They did say when it was all done that I just talked all the way through.  To be fair, Ive been shielding since last March and had been stuck downstairs with my bed in living room since I had a foot operation in Oct 2019, and still am as I cant use the stairs, I hadnt been in a room with more than 3 people since lmthem and everything just came out. I couldnt stop.  I was sore that night snd bled for a week. 

    At my appointment I too heard those same words as you and "this will be very bad for you" and so thought thsts it, the doc was negative so he knows right.  Had to fight my own thoughts and lack of sleep made it all worse too. 

    Yes I do hope you get good news soon.
