Mole situated on back.

Hi all

I have had a mole for as long as i can remember which is situated on my lower lefs hand side of my back (in line with trousers) I have always been conscious of it as it is in the shape of a heart!! Over the last few years it has developed a raised area on one side - similar to a skin tag? but its directly over the mole and my mole has also changed in size. I can't really tell whether the colour has changed as it is really hard to examine even when looking in a mirror.

Anyway, i was referred to a dermatologist and had photographs taken and the lady also inspected it. She said that it was an abnormal looking mole but she doesnt see anything else wrong with it and seems fine. She explained that it was nothing to worry about and probably wont need a follow up. As i was told this i didnt really worry as the months went on and i didnt hear anything....

9 months later, i recieved a call basically stating that the clinician has reviewed my hospital notes and would like to have a face to face appointment. This was booked in within 14 days, i then turned up and the clinic was cancelled (Im guessing due to covid) I have since recieved a letter for three weeks time.

What do you think they will discuss? is this a routine follow up? I think it plays on my mind because its something im very conscious of and a mole that ive always been sceptocal about. Times are hard at the moment due to covid, and ti was intitially explained to be that they have had a very big backlog thats why its taken so long. Although i do hope people that are at higher risk have been seen a lot quicker than me!

I suppose this post it just to really understand other peoples process's and whether this is a normal appy to follow up despite being told it was nothing to worry about?

  • Hi,

It's probably that they wanted to keep an eye on it for any changes, at least for a small amount of time. She said it 'probably' won't need a follow up but it sounds like someone decided to keep an eye on you anyway, probably because your mole may be dysplastic (atypical) - these are dodgy looking moles that are benign but that they keep an eye on because they have the ability to turn cancerous. People with a dysplastic mole also have more chance of developing another during their life or they already have lots of moles that are difficult to keep an eye on.

Covid has affected most hospital dermatology departments. They are seeing new patients quickly & removing moles that they think need a biopsy but the regular, after care check ups are being postponed for weeks & months, depending on each situation. Under normal circumstances they would probably have checked you after 6 months - this gives enough time for any changes to be noticed. However, your hospital sound to be 3 months behind with their clinics which isn't unusual at the moment.

I'm sure they haven't changed their mind as to the diagnosis, they are just playing catch up with monitoring check ups. Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
