Borderline bloodtest

I was wondering if anyone has ever had a 'borderline' bloodtest result, or knows in practical terms what that means?

I found a lump on the side of my neck 3+ months ago. Have an ultrasound booked for March, but the bloods have come back 'borderline'. My doctor is going to call me about it tomorrow, but I'm half-way between thinking it's quite a normal result and panicking. Really wish the receptionist had given me details and just left it to the doc. :(

  • Borderline means it could be considered normal in some cases and abnormal in others it all depends on what was normal for you. They may compare it to results from previous tests to get a better understanding and discuss it with you. March seems like a very long time to wait for something like that. Has the lump grown? Has it gone down a lot? Is it hard / tender?
hope it all goes well for you with the Dr x

ps. Receptionists aren't legally allowed to give that sort of info, it's always left to the Dr. X

  • Thank you so much for replying.

This is the first blood test they've done in relation to the lump, but I had some done about 6 months ago to confirm I had anemia, so hopefully they might be able to compare those.

The lump is hard like rubber, and doesn't hurt at all. It feels like it's grown a bit in shape, but not massively. Def hasn't got smaller. When I first went to my doctor he said they don't usually worry until they get to 2cm; it's smaller than that. I have no other symptoms (I've had heartburn and tiredness, but that's life isn't it, at the mo).

I'm sure it'll be nothing. I can't believe I'm getting so worried, not like me at all!

Thanks again, I appreciate it. x

  • Oh if it's that small surely it must be harmless! I'm not a dr but I've read that a lump that grows a lot within a short period of time is something to look at with worry x

my GP said if they don't go down in 2 weeks then it's something to worry about if they're getting bigger too. X

  • Hey, I'm just wondering what the outcome for this was. I'm currently in the same boat with a lump on my neck and a borderline blood test.

    Currently in a worry spiral

  • Hi there,

It turned out to be nothing at all. I did have a lump in my neck (still do), but the docs think it might have enlarged nodule from years ago that never went down. They did anither scan and another blood test and all was normal. NFA.

It sounded like a really common thing, so fingers crossed that everything's fine for you too!

  • Thank you so much!! My little boy has the same thing and had test on it so I presumed mine is the same but the blood test result scared me a bit. But I do have bad psoriasis so that could be the abnormal result but like you I only spoke to the receptionist and not a doctor so couldn't put my worried to rest

  • You're more than welcome! I remember at the time they did ask me if I'd had any bugs as i think colds and things like psoriasis can spike your numbers. The best of luck.
