What happens after tongue biopsy?

I have a small white lump at the back of my tongue on my left hand side. It's on the side not on top and not underneath.  It's been there for just over a year. I thought it was a cyst or an ulcer so I ignored it. Then I thought I'll mention it to my doctor next time I see her, then covid hit the UK so I couldn't get an appointment. The doctor took one look and referred me to a dental surgeon. The dental surgeon says I need a biopsy and sure enough 2 day later I got my appointment in. The speed of this has taken me by surprise and since most NHS ops are being cancelled I assume they think its cancer. I didn't ask as I didn't really want to hear it. Anyone know what will happen during the biopsy, will it hurt, will I be able to go back to work and will it affect my speaking and eating?

Ps I've told my family and friends I'm getting a cyst removed because I can't bare to worry them, especially my daughter.

  • Hello Discoju

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting on some investigations at the moment. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things.

We've quite a few members who have been through diagnosis and treatment for oral cancers and hopefully some of them will see your post and reply to share their experiences.

We do have some information on our website here which you may find helpful but I'd suggest giving our team of nurses a call as well. I'm sure they will be able to give you some information and advice ahead of your appointment. If you'd like to talk to them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • You will be given an injection under the tongue and they will cut a small piece off. In my case it required 1 stitch, I never felt a thing and it was over in two minutes. No impact on speaking or eating once anaesthetic wore off
