Do I need to drink prep for CT scan of abdomen/bowel?

Hi folks,

My CT scan is scheduled for this Thursday. My doctor requested this because of the gap in between my first colonoscopy, the 2nd is scheduled for 3 months.

I would appreciate it if you could help me? I rang the scan centre to see if I should prepare in any way ana I told just arrive 20minutes prior? This is for a ct scan on my abdomen and bowel. I called them back because I read that you need to drink a prep prior? Can someone please help or guide me? Thanks

  • Hello Pagan123,

As I read your post, I thought I might leave you with some information on the CT scan preparation, although you should confirm this with your doctor. To read more, please click here.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that our team of nurses will be happy to chat with you if you feel like speaking with them might help. They're available on this phone number 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Wishing you best of luck with your test,

  • Having recently finished treatment for anal/rectal cancer...I've had my fair share of scans recently..

In terms of prep...for initial scans you dont normally require to have a full bladder.

If you do need radiotherapy- then yes for treatment and for scans to prepare for treatment you need to do so (having a full bladder reduces the risk of damage to the bladder during treatment...and treatment prep - they will want to scan your body "as it will be for treatment")

But - for diagnostic scans-  no -  just turn up.

    Hope it goes ok

  • Thank you Renata. My scan didn't go ahead in the end because I have a bacterial infection and I'm on antibiotics and inhaler for five days.
