Lump in neck

Hello,

I've probably gotten myself a bit worked up in my head but figured I'd post on here and see if anyone has ever experienced anything similar.

When I was in my late teens I discovered a lipoma (a small benign fatty lump) on my ribs, had it checked and it was all good and nothing to worry about. A couple of years ago I felt something that I figured must be similar in my neck, at the front, on the right side between my Adam's apple and my glands. I didn't think anything of it and automatically dismissed it as being another lipoma and therefore nothing to worry about. Whilst at the doctors last week I mentioned my lipoma seemed to be getting bigger over the last while, he had a look at my ribs and assured me it was normal and asked where the other one was because I mentioned I had more than one. I explained my neck, he examined it and said he was sure it's nothing to worry about since it's been there a while but he wanted to refer me to ENT to get it checked out properly because he is less comfortable about that lump and doesn't think it's a lipoma.

He then asked lots of questions about weight, appetite etc. I was so shocked that he was concerned about the lump in my neck and annoyed at myself for being so stupid as to not just go get it checked I didn't really answer the questions with much thought and now I've gone away and starting worrying whilst I'm waiting for this ENT appointment.

I've since weighed myself and I've lost over a stone without noticing, I'm sure that could just be down to not going to the gym throughout Covid and lockdown but I have found several swollen lymph nodes in my neck and one in my armpit. I've always had enlarged lymph nodes around my ears and in my groin for as long as I can remember but these ones are new, or ones that I've never noticed before at least.

I haven't spoken to anyone about it because I'm only 27 so it seems silly to think I might have something like cancer but the doomsday disaster stance in my brain has kicked in and I feel like it could be a possibility.

Has anyone ever found a lump in their neck and it's been totally harmless?

Matt

  • Hi Matt,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand your concerns about this and I'm sure the referral may have been a bit of a worry. However it sounds like the doctor isn't too concerned and is doing this to be safe, which is good as it means you'll get some answers soon.

Try not to assume other symptoms or bodily changes are necessarily connected, as there could of course be other reasons for things like weight loss and enlarged lymph nodes.

I hope it's not too long to wait for your appointment and that you find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
