Lump in neck - no worry until 2cm?

Hi anyone who is reading this. I am a 47-year-old woman and found a lump in my neck about 3 months ago. It was the size of a small pea, but now it feels like it's more of a small bean shape. It feels like rubber but moves under the skin. It doesn't hurt or feel tender, but it sometimes that area feels a bit achy. I went to my doctor in December and he wasn't worried at all, and said it was probably there after an infection. I hadn't been ill and had no temp. They said to come back if it hadn't gone away in a month. I left it two months and went back. He had a prod about and said it was still small, and they don't usually worry until the mass is at least 2cm, and also said that if it was growing it was really slow so probably not cancer.

Anyway, they did a blood test which should be back at the end of the week and they've also booked me in for a scan in March just to be on the safe side. I feel a bit bad about taking up resources for something which is probably nothing.

Has anyone had anything like this? I'm sure it's nothing but would be good to hear anyone else's experience.

Thank you.

  • Hi there, so sorry that you're worried - I can totally relate! For me it turned out to be nothing. I did a blood test that showed I had really low white count, but it was redone and had doubled-back to the safe area. I had an ultrsound and they said it was abnormal, but when they redid it at the hospital it looked today normal. Basically they said it was a reactive node that just stayed large. I have lost quite a lot of weight in the last few years, and it made me wonder if maybe it's always been there all along but I've never been able to feel it so easily.

I didn't get as far as having a biopsy or MRI. It sounds like you're doctors are taking it seriously which is probably wise. I hope you can lean on your close friendsl scanxiety is very real! I found writing how I felt down really helped, just to get it out of my head.

I really hope you're okay. I don't look on here anymore, but I do get alerts for replies, so let me know how you get on. I'll be here if you need me.

  • I can so relate to this! I found a lump in my neck on the right side in July. I went to my GP immediately but she said it could be from when I was a child and didn't go down and if it grows to go back. Like you I've almost lost 3 stone in the last year and half so I'm wondering if it's been there ages and I've never noticed as my neck and face went quite fat. Since I found my lump I've lost another stone so it feels more prominent so I'm debating wether to go back. I don't think it's gotten bigger but I can feel it more. Maybe bevause of the weight loss tho?? I'm just nervous to go to the doctors tbh cos I'm fearing the worst xx

  • Hi Georgie73

Just wondering how you've got on, hope you're ok.

  • Hi Mama, I'd def still get it checked if I were you. Chance are it'll be nothing but now when I feel it I don't start to worry!! Congrats on the weght loss btw :)

  • Hi Von, yes completly fine thanks! They investgated and it really was/is a lymph node that has reacted and just not gone back down again. I hasn't gotten any bigger, so I must have just not noticed it was there - probably, as I said in my other post, because of my weight loss. It's probably been there for ages. Very glad and grateful the doc took it seriously though.

  • Yes I'm definitely going to go back tomorrow. Absolutely terrified of the worst tho aww thank you. To be honest it's caused nothing but hassle. Also felt a lump in my breast which turned out to be nothing just a result of weight loss and being able to feel it now. Wish I'd stayed fat haha!

  • I've found a small lump on the left side of my neck, just smaller than a pea and can only reslly be found if I move my head and tilt it back, takes around 35 to 45 seconds to find. I've got myself into a panic as I've been on Google and it brings up lymphoma all the time. Ive got a phone consultation with thr GP tomorrow but I'm scared it's something sinister and can't sleep because of it.

  • Hi I was just wondering what the out come was for your lump as I have one that sounds very similar
