Lump in neck - no worry until 2cm?

Hi anyone who is reading this. I am a 47-year-old woman and found a lump in my neck about 3 months ago. It was the size of a small pea, but now it feels like it's more of a small bean shape. It feels like rubber but moves under the skin. It doesn't hurt or feel tender, but it sometimes that area feels a bit achy. I went to my doctor in December and he wasn't worried at all, and said it was probably there after an infection. I hadn't been ill and had no temp. They said to come back if it hadn't gone away in a month. I left it two months and went back. He had a prod about and said it was still small, and they don't usually worry until the mass is at least 2cm, and also said that if it was growing it was really slow so probably not cancer.

Anyway, they did a blood test which should be back at the end of the week and they've also booked me in for a scan in March just to be on the safe side. I feel a bit bad about taking up resources for something which is probably nothing.

Has anyone had anything like this? I'm sure it's nothing but would be good to hear anyone else's experience.

Thank you.

  • Hey,

So sorry to hear you are going through this situation... it is very scary and I wanted to reply as I am currently going through something very similar to yourself.
Mine all started in October last year, had some acid reflux, a lot of anxiety due to Covid situation etc. I started to feel like there were lumps in my throat and that I couldn't breathe properly. Then I felt lots of lumps on either side of my neck. The bigger ones on the right side. All different sizes, movable and some feel tender to touch others don't. Was just a terrible experience trying to be seen by a doctor as he kept telling me it's my anxiety and to just take some anti acid tablets like Rennies. I went to a walk in centre, he prescribed me anti acids for a month. But I still felt like it wasn't right so I pushed to see my GP - had a full blood count, came back with high IGA levels which they think could mean I have IBD or something. This all took months to be sorted and numerous phone calls it's been a long journey. Still felt unwell and stressed so my GP finally referred me for a Ultrasound scan which happened within 2 weeks on the emergency referral scheme. Was terrified and but it came back as reactive lymph nodes maybe due to an infection, which I'm not sure about but my GP also referred me to the ENT department as I can see a growth on the back of my tongue. They called me and didn't want to see me as I'm quite young and no history of cancer in my family. So they've now put me on gastro resistant tablets for 8 weeks if there is no improvement then I will need to come in for an endoscopy.

Sorry for the long post just thought it might take your mind off your worries while reading all of mine..

number one thing is to make sure you tell your doctor all your symptoms, worries and try not to let them fob you off or take to long with getting back to you. I feel like I was too soft at the beginning just letting them say whatever they needed to get me to go home and out of their hair.

Also try and relax as much as you can, stress really does make everything worse! Stay off researching things on google it has made me feel so scared at times and doesn't do is any favours.
go for walks, do things that make you happy and keep you busy. Talk to people about it all, how you feel just get it out in the open. You are not alone, I'm still going through this and I still have bad days where I feel lost and hopeless.

If you ever want to talk I am here, and remember that most likely is not cancer, could be sooo many other things so keep that in mind.

    Take care xx

  • Thank you Bec, I appreciate your reply. I haven't told anyone about it really (honestly I don't want to make a fuss, hence being on here!). I'm really sorry you're going through it too.

I have had heartburn for the last 3-4 months which is unusual for me, but I didn't think to mention it. Is that a thing? I've also had bowel problems for about the same about of time, but I'm newly divorced so that's probably down to stress.

I'm glad they're finally looking into things for you, but you shouldn't have to fight for it. I wonder why some of your lumps hurt, and some don't? I have to confess my doc has been great so far. He said he's sure it's nothing but did the blood test for the same day and sorted the scan for March. I think I'll feel a bit more easy once I hear about the bloods on Friday.

The waiting is horrible. Here if you need to chat, too. x

  • Hi Bec,

My GP called this afternoon. He's put me in a 'fast pathway' to be seen by an ENT at my local hospital. Apparantly they'll check if there are any obvious reasons why my lymph node is still enlarged, and might do a biopsy to rule out lymphoma etc. Should get seen within two weeks, which is a relief, but I'll be glad to get it done and dusted. Also trying hard not to think of the worst case scenario!!

    How are things your end?

  • Hi Georgie. I was wondering how you got on. I have a lump in my lymph node on my neck. Noticed it about 6 weeks ago. Had a biopsy today and am now waiting for the results. The radiographer said it's solid and 2cm wide. He managed to extract lots of cells but I am so worried. He mentioned I will need a MRI and CT scan but no-one is confirming anything to me. I'm a single mum with a daughter about to go to uni. I have no family nearby but a couple of very close friends. I'm already thinking the worst but praying they'll come back and say it's benign. The wait is awful.

Any advice from anyone on this thread would be appreciated.

  • Hi there, so sorry that you're worried - I can totally relate! For me it turned out to be nothing. I did a blood test that showed I had really low white count, but it was redone and had doubled-back to the safe area. I had an ultrsound and they said it was abnormal, but when they redid it at the hospital it looked today normal. Basically they said it was a reactive node that just stayed large. I have lost quite a lot of weight in the last few years, and it made me wonder if maybe it's always been there all along but I've never been able to feel it so easily.

I didn't get as far as having a biopsy or MRI. It sounds like you're doctors are taking it seriously which is probably wise. I hope you can lean on your close friendsl scanxiety is very real! I found writing how I felt down really helped, just to get it out of my head.

I really hope you're okay. I don't look on here anymore, but I do get alerts for replies, so let me know how you get on. I'll be here if you need me.

  • I can so relate to this! I found a lump in my neck on the right side in July. I went to my GP immediately but she said it could be from when I was a child and didn't go down and if it grows to go back. Like you I've almost lost 3 stone in the last year and half so I'm wondering if it's been there ages and I've never noticed as my neck and face went quite fat. Since I found my lump I've lost another stone so it feels more prominent so I'm debating wether to go back. I don't think it's gotten bigger but I can feel it more. Maybe bevause of the weight loss tho?? I'm just nervous to go to the doctors tbh cos I'm fearing the worst xx

  • Hi Georgie73

Just wondering how you've got on, hope you're ok.

  • Hi Mama, I'd def still get it checked if I were you. Chance are it'll be nothing but now when I feel it I don't start to worry!! Congrats on the weght loss btw :)

  • Hi Von, yes completly fine thanks! They investgated and it really was/is a lymph node that has reacted and just not gone back down again. I hasn't gotten any bigger, so I must have just not noticed it was there - probably, as I said in my other post, because of my weight loss. It's probably been there for ages. Very glad and grateful the doc took it seriously though.

  • Yes I'm definitely going to go back tomorrow. Absolutely terrified of the worst tho aww thank you. To be honest it's caused nothing but hassle. Also felt a lump in my breast which turned out to be nothing just a result of weight loss and being able to feel it now. Wish I'd stayed fat haha!

  • I've found a small lump on the left side of my neck, just smaller than a pea and can only reslly be found if I move my head and tilt it back, takes around 35 to 45 seconds to find. I've got myself into a panic as I've been on Google and it brings up lymphoma all the time. Ive got a phone consultation with thr GP tomorrow but I'm scared it's something sinister and can't sleep because of it.

  • Hi I was just wondering what the out come was for your lump as I have one that sounds very similar
