Breast Screening Appointment

Hi All,

I attended my GP last week with a lump that i found in my right Breast. He has reffered me to my local clinic for scans nad further tests. At the time he seemed concerned given some family history and the nature of the lump, he also told me it would be around two weeks.

My local Hospital operates an online refferal booking service and i was really shocked that im having to wait untill beginning of March (nearly a month to the day from the GP apointment). Is anyone else experiencing such long delays? Im absolutley terrified and although i know the current situation means lots of things are delayed it is much longer than i was expecting.

Any ideas on what i can do, if anything?

  • Hi, today I got a referral to arrange an appointment within the next 2 days as by post would be too long apparently. I would try again as it seems you can be seen much quicker

  • Hi where in the country are you? I was at the gp with a lump mid December and told there would be a 2 week referral. But my actual clinic appointment was 4 weeks from the day I was at the gp. I'm in ayrshire, maybe certain areas have a longer wait, I was told mine was 4 weeks wait because of a backlog

  • Hello

Im in Bucks and I got a letter confirming my app for 6 days after my GP referral. I thought there was a rule of a 2 week wait?

  • hey,

I'm in Wiltshire i cant find anytign about potentiall delays on the hospital site. I presumed 2 weeks was a maximum, it seems cruel to have people worry to death for a month!

  • I also thought 2 weeks was the maximum and was expecting to go to my local hospitals breast clinic. But I ended up having to go to a different clinic an hour away due to backlogs. While there I had an ultrasound and biopsy, got my results 3 days ago and turns out they want to remove one of my lumps. I asked the woman on the phone how long I would need to wait on that appointment, she said she honestly doesn't know!!!

Really not fair to have people waiting with this hanging over them

  • Oh gosh Kelsi that's horrible, I hope it's sooner rather than later for you.

That's the thing that concerns me most that it's four weeks now then a other two then another how ever many after if they want to biopsy then god knows how long again If it is anything.

  • You will more than likely get an ultrasound at your appointment, that's what I was told to expect. And if you do, they will tell you there and then what they think any lumps are. I was told at the time mine looked benign but she wanted to be sure with biopsies on 2 of them. Then she also did them there and then. So hopefully if you do need a biopsy you can have it done on the day

  • That's encouraging at least, fingers crossed.

I may give them a call tomorrow and find out what they do with cancellations as even if I have to logg on every day to check I can do that.

  • We dont have an online appointment system up here, but that would definitely be something to try if you can do that. Failing that I would get back in touch with your gp and tell them you really cant wait that long and see if he can either chase it up or offer you somewhere quicker at another clinic. 2 weeks after my gp visit I got a letter offering me an appointment at another clinic, I phoned the number and asked why it wasnt at my local one, and I was told that if I wanted my local hospital there was a 10 week waiting list so I had no option but to go to the one which was an hour away. It really is terrible, everything seems to be on standstill because of covid
