Throat cancer

Hi,

I've recently had a sore throat for a few weeks. I phoned my doctor who prescribed antibiotics for 10 days, these had no effect. I then went to see my doctor who examined my throat and said it was not infected and arranged for an ent specialist to help.

He knew straight away that I had throat cancer and sent me for biopsy, ct and mri scans. I will be seeing him again next Tuesday for the results and discuss treatments.

The fact that he knew so quickly worries me on the outcome of the results, what stage, has it spread and if so we're to.

Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

Meanwhile my throat is sore, but paracetamol help.

Anyone else had a similar event?

  • Hi Jimmy

Jimmy if this turns out to be throat cancer take it as a blessing that he found it so quickly. Throat cancer can take a long time to diagnose in my case months and months . I had stage 4 but throat cancer isn't actually staged like other cancers ) on the base of my tongue that didn't even show up on a biopsy ! It was only when I said but doctor now I have lumps in my neck did they take note .

Jimmy if you are going to get cancer this is the cancer that you want .... treatment is brutal but has a very very good outcome . I finished my treatment in May last year and have had clear scans .

wait until you know for sure this is actually throat cancer of some sort as the throat covers a few places tonsils , tongue etc . Normally like o say if it's been there a while it will travel to your lymph nodes obviously trying to escape out of your body but collects in the nodes because it has nowhere to go .

keep in touch and let me know how your results go . But like I say if this is cancer you will be ok .

    Fingers crossed Ginny x x

  • Hi Ginny,

Thanks for your positive response. I'm seeing the consultant on Tuesday next week.

I have had a sore throat for months on and off, but due to the pandemic just got on with things. I'm nervous and worried, but will deal with the full diagnosis and options when told.

Thanks for your support, I'll keep in touch

  • hi, sorry to jump on a post but your words have really reassured me - i had a pet scan mid january, and when the results were back i got a call from Doctors to say that they have refered me to ENT because a hotspot on the base of my left side of my tongue has shown up.

i have an appointment with ENT on tuesday and have a horrible gut feeling its cancer. whats worse is i dont even feel panic or anxiety just a horrendous sense that i already knew it would be.

can i ask what the treatment is for it?  i dont have any lumps or swollen glands. its been found when looking for something else. xx

  • Hi Ginny,

Sorry i've not replied recently, lots going on with more biopsy's and waiting for results. Anyway, the outcome is HPV positive, T2 N1 left oropharyngeal scc.

Chemoradiation treatment starts on the 22nd March for 6 weeks. Chemo is cisplatin every week with radiotherapy monday through to friday weekend breaks

Worrying about the treatment side effects now more than the cancer, ironic how the mind works.

Anyway hope your keeping well and great to hear you cancer free.

    Thanks, Jimmy
