In need of some guidance.

Hey. I'm hoping with all my heart this message reaches all of you in the best of health and good furtune.

Since September of 2020, I've had two appointments to have my thumb checked. I have dark lines running vertically along my nail, and since mid-2020 it has been causing me physical pain. The appointment I've had early January with a dermatologist concluded in scheduling a biopsy for my thumb. I've been told to wait a month, but I've not heard anything back since then. No calls, no letters, no emails. I've just turned 27 years of age. During all of this, I've been left in the dark with regard to the steps I should be taking and the resources that are available to me. Not hearing anything for months at a time does take a huge mental toll on me and makes me anxious, especially with the pain that currently has a big question mark on what could actually be causing it. I've lost my maternal granddad to lung cancer in 2019 and my maternal aunt to triple negative breast cancer in 2020, so it really does feel like I have to suffer in silence so as to not overburden or worry my family after the fact, especially at this stage of uncertainty. I've called the department of dermatology at my hospital yesterday for an update but it went straight to the answer phone.

Are there any resources for people that haven't been diagnosed yet? I know there's the Melanoma UK app but isn't that for patients that have already been diagnosed? I really need support, especially for my mental health.

Is there anything I could do in the meantime except monitor my thumb?

  • My unit goes straight to answer phone aswell. Try calling your hospitals main line, explaining exactly what you need and why, often the number is slightly different for a slightly different query. 9-4 Monday they should be available.

sorry to hear of the toll waiting is taking on you, I know it's very stressful x
