Hi there I'm a 27-year-old female and I'm getting laparoscopic surgery next week to remove a 7 cm simple cyst and a 3.6 cm dermoid cyst. I know dermoids are non-cancerous 98% of the time but I wanted to know peoples experience with this surgery and potential cancer concerns. I am aware the simple cyst is of no concern except for potential discomfort. A little background, I had an IUD placed a few years ago. I had follow-up ultrasounds that didn't reveal any dermoid at the time. I then started having pelvic pain and had an ultrasound in 07/2019 which revealed a 1.9 cm dermoid cyst on my left ovary. They decided to monitor this and I will give you the dates on my ultrasounds with the dermoid size
Ultrasound dates/size
-07/2019: 1.9cm.
-01/2020: 2.5 x 1.4 x 2.4 cm
-04/2020: 2.8 x 2.4 x 2.6 cm
-07/2020: 3.2 x 2.5 x 2.6 cm
-01/2021: 3.6 x 3.5 x 3.6 cm
To my knowledge dermoids are typically very slow growing. Averaging around 1.8mm per year (0.18cm's) and my dermoid has clearly grown much faster than that. Besides the faster growth rate I have constant symptoms like abdominal bloating and fullness and frequent urination. I've never had any blood work to check for ovarian cancer. I'm sure once they remove the dermoid they'll send it off for testing but I'm worried they're ruling out cancer too soon.
