High risk breast cancer MRI screening

Hi all,

I'm at a very high risk of breast cancer and was referred for MRI which I had today but later found out online that it's usually done alongside mammography which I didn't have just yet.

I'm supposed to have MRI annually from this year onwards.

I'm sure it's all fine, but I didn't get to chat to the nurses very much, it was very quick, and no one mentioned mammography yet. Should I expect a referral for mammography to come soon too, or call my GP to request one? Or is it not always done for high risk patience as part of the screening?

I can feel a small bump in my breast, I check my breast fairly regularly, but often forget but with the MRI date coming up I checked a couple of days ago and detected something I don't think I could feel before. I mentioned it to the nurses today and they said theyll do an additional test, but nothing happened, or perhaps they meant an additional test in the MRI?

Apologies if it's a silly question, just a little confused!

  • Hello Yvonnebe

Screening procedures for high-risk patients can vary so I'm unsure if you will have been referred for a mammogram as well as an MRI.

I would suggest speaking to whoever has arranged your screening appointments whether that is a local genetics service, GP, or another health professional. They will be best placed to let you know what tests, if any, you are due to have in addition to the yearly MRI.

I hope you have some clarification soon.

    Best wishes,
