Terrified I have cervical cancer

Hi,

I'm not really sure how to use this site, but here goes. I'm 22, almost 23, and I've always had really heavy, painful periods that last around 6 days. But over the past 6-7 months, I keep getting this thick, brown discharge that's often tinged with blood, usually right in the middle of my cycle but sometimes it's random. I also spot after having sex sometimes, and it's really scary. What's scary is that these symptoms can be so many things, but because of my crippling anxiety I'm imagining the worst.

I'm going to book a GP appointment so I can be tested, as it's already been suggested to me by my doctor, but I'm scared of that too.

Has anyone got any words of comfort or can anyone relate to this? My hypochondria clearly isn't helping me as it's now almost 2am and I can't sleep.

Thank you :)

  • Hi,

I get this all the time.  I have also had a smear, im 29 now but my first smear came bsck abnormal and to say I panicked is an undrrstatimate. After going the hospital  a biopsy was taken and I waited 12 months. When I went back they lasered the bad cells away and now im back to normal testing.

Sometimes the thick brown stuff is old blood coming away.  I find mine is when I miss a pill it messes with my body in such a bad way.  Try not to think the worst, I know its easier said than done.  If you are taking contraception,  it could be your bodycdoesnt like that now and you need another option.  Thinking of you x

  • Hi, I have been having the same for the past year, because of the covid I had been waiting for a scan for 8 months, couldn't find anything sinister in the scan apart from slight thickening of my uterus and a small bit of fluid, which he seemed to think was left over period. Blood tests came back normal, seeing a hospital gynaecologist in 2 weeks to find out what the problem is. I always think it's the worse. My smears are up to date and have always been normal. I am 45 so have been told it could be peri menopause, hope it's just that. Like you the discharge always happens in mid-cycle and sometimes random. Make an appointment with the doctors as soon as you can because the waiting times at the moment are long. Let me know what they say

  • Thank you, I really appreciate this.

I don't take the pill, but I do take sertraline, and I've heard that it can have some weird side effects. The only thing that's keeping me from thinking it's cancer is that I've always had terrible periods and pains, so surely this has to be linked somehow?

    I'm glad you're okay.

  • Hi,

Thanks so much for replying to me. It's really tough to avoid thinking the worst will happen. I don't know about you, but I always have these vivid images in my head whenever I worry about a health condition, and my brain likes to rationalise these images and tell me that that's what's going to happen.

I hope everything is okay with you, it's a good sign that the scan came back okay and your blood test was normal! Try to take some comfort in that :)
