21 yo, Ovarian cyst and being sent for MRI scan

hi, i'm 21 years old and have had irregular periods for at least the past 4 years, IBS symptoms and occasional lower abdominal pain. when explained to my doctor they said my period should settle more into my 20s, try change my diet etc. i went to a clinic yesterday and explained my symptoms and the doctor did an ultrasound. the doctor found a 4cm ovarian cyst and said "there's something in the cyst so i'm going to have to send you for an MRI scan. the doctor descibed it as a shadow. i immediately started to cry and the doctor said i shouldn't be worried because i am young. the doctor then took some bloods and said they'd call with the results. the doctor also said i have PCOS too. i was in total shock. i hadnt heard of any of these terms before. should i be worried ???? if anyone has any info or advise id be so appreciative because i'm a wreck with worry, thanks so much xx

  • Hi faith,

I know hearing these types of things from the doctors can be scary especially when it's new and unknown but try not to worry too much and avoid searching symptoms on google because all it does is bring back negative results which won't make you feel better!

I'm 25 and have had irregular periods and issues with abdominal pains since I was in my late teens, I also have IBS like you. When I was in my late teens I used to get irregular and really heavy periods with bad pain, this went on for years it was suspected I had endometriosis but the docs didn't want to run tests because they are invasive and instead suggested I have the coil fitted to stop the periods as this would also help treat endo if I had it. This caused an issue in itself as once I got the coil even though it stopped my periods I ended up getting ovarian cysts and constant lower abdominal pain! One of them like yours was 4cm on my right ovary, the pain was something else but it went away in the end! Finally last year I decided the coil wasn't right for me and now I'm on the pop pill which has been best contraceptive I've been on (not recommending this as everyone suits different), though my periods are still irregular they are much lighter and I hardly ever get pain. I have also made some big lifestyle changes in the last year, eating healthier and losing 2.5 stone which I'm sure has contributed to making me feel better. Even though they're not regular this is the first time I've felt 'normal' since my issues started with periods. I've had so many ongoing issues especially with the IBS and countless scans and bloods taken over the years, I'd always be convinced something was terribly wrong but everything has always come back fine.

I know what that worry and frustration feels like when you are waiting on results to come back but hopefully yours are all okay. It sounds like your docs are taking it seriously and doing all the right checks which is great. Have they recommended any contraceptive to you to help treat your PCOS or are you already on any?

Hoping it all goes well for you xx

  • thank you so so much for your reply!

honestly i'm thinking the worst but also thinking it could be endometriosis and that's why there's a shadow in the cyst, hopefully is something simple . i'm not on birth control and the doctor didn't recommend anything for the pcos she didn't say anything other than that i have it. is this normal? or usually would they recommend thing or medixataion?

thanks so much again for your reply xx it's good to know someone has had similar symptoms and it was ok

  • that's okay you're most welcome! I was scrolling through and couldn't ignore it as I know how you must be feeling!

These conversations around issues aren't had enough with us when we're young women, so many women go through these types of problems but because we don't know about them it makes us feel like we're not normal if we don't have perfect periods! All my female friends have had issues at some point with their periods. I think sometimes as well, as much as doctors help us they don't acknowledge that as a patient we don't have much of a clue on these things and they throw words around expecting us to know what it means when we don't which adds to the worry!

I think whether they suggest contraceptive/other treatment will depend on your symptoms, sometimes the combined pill can help to regulate your periods and treat the hormonal imbalance - but it's different for everyone and is down to what suits you! I know some people don't take any contraceptive for it but find changing their diet/lifestyle can help, again its just down to what suits the individual! Maybe when the docs call you back about your bloods you could ask if they can offer some advice on PCOS, if they can explain what it means for you and how best you can treat it. It seems a bit unfair they've just told you that you have it without much explanation.

Fingers crossed your results come back fine xx
