Nothing showing on breast ultrasound

Hiya, I've just turned 33,mum of three, youngest 5m.three years ago I had an ultrasound of left breast due to a large lump... Was diagnosed as just normal tissue.

In December last year, I felt a lump, about 2cm x2cm, just under the areola of the left breast. Painless, irregular edges, rock hard, feels like a large bit of gravel in all honesty. Had a gp app to check, she referred me to the breast clinic, was seen withing ten days,on 23rd Jan.

Examined, consultant could feel, and said was extremely hard but she believed is a cyst, but sent me for ultrasound to be sure. Absolutely nothing was seen on the ultrasound. Lady doing it was really shocked, as she could feel it, and couldn't belive nothing was showing. So sent home, back on the 26 th Jan for core biopsy.

Saw same consultant again, and she basically had to do the biopsy "blind", as obviously she couldn't pick it up on the ultrasound, and normally the biopsy is ultrasound assisted!

Had the local anaesthetic, I didn't even feel the needle go in, or the lidocaine, which normally stings(I'm a vet nurse). She took multiple attempts to get biopsies, and took three, where they floated in the formalin(good sign apparently). However she said it was suspicious that nothing had shown on the us, when it was highly palpable, and as hard as it was, and that she couldn't be sure she had actually entered the lump, but she thinks she did. . Once during the biopsy process I felt a sharp stab, but no pain.

Slight bruising, no after pain, slight bleeding, had a few sutures aswell as steri strips as she had to nick my skin three times.

Today is one week after biopsy, and last night I accidentally brushed against the lumo and felt a sharp pain, but no other issues.

Today I've received a letter, a copy of what was sent to the gp, saying that because the lump wasn't present on us, If the biopsy come back as b1, we have to accept that, despite it being suspicious, and despite she's not sure wheter the tissue removed was from the lump or not. I completely understand that they can't keep sending me for tests etc, but have been told by the same consultant that cysts, fibroadenoma, adenoma, glandular tissue etc would all show on us, including hardened fatty tissue.

I'm going in on the 11th,but just wondered if anyone had had similar symptoms. Obviously every single one of us is different, but if this was a dog at work with a suspicious, palpable mammary lump, we would have removed it straight away haha. And I know, i know, it's different, but my brother was fobbed off for 8 months with ibs, and it turned out to be stage four bowel cancer, a diagnosis at the age of 27.and the consultant told me there is a slight link to bowel and breast cancer in families.

  • Hi Talchiamo,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can certainly understand your concerns and questions about this, and the potential lack of certainty.

I would suggest keeping a note of all these points and talking them through at your appointment next week. It's of course important that you get answers and peace of mind with this, so try to get some reassurance from the doctor when you see them.

Meanwhile if anyone here has any similar experience to share then hopefully they'll be along soon. I can see you've been chatting to a few others on here also and I hope that has been helpful.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
