Petrified I have bowel cancer.

Hi

I'm a 30 year old male.

Recently I've found blood in my stool. It coats some of  the stool and is always bright red. I've had small amounts on my toilet paper in the past and on rare occasions some in the bowl but recently I've noticed it on the stool. I first found it again two weeks ago and emailed my GP (online consultancies due to COVID) I had a DRE and nothing was found but my blood test showed I had Iron Deficiency Amenia (now on folic acid tablets) This instantly sent my mind into overdrive. I have done a stool sample but nothing has come back yet. On Friday just gone I found a small amount again. Trying to make myself feel better it is more prominent when I strain to go. I now check my stools everyday to the point of picking them up and inspecting them. My mind is in overdrive and I'm crying writing this. I've just emailed my doctor again asking if I can have a colonoscopy because I've read survivor stories and posts on this forum and I've now convinced myself I have colon cancer. I don't think anybody can say anything to convince me otherwise but it helps me writing it down. I'm scared to tell my friends and family.

  • Hi there and please calm down or you will make yourself ill worrying.  Bright red blood comes from a vein and we have many in our back passage so if you strain to pass a stool motion you enlarge these veins which bulge, open up and bright red blood seeps out onto your toilet and your stools.  I had this really badly due to a difficult birth and had surgery to repair it.  But it sounds as though you need to put your mind at rest and see a GP who can look and see if this is the case.  If you are losing blood then you will tend to be anemic which I was as well.  The doctors are seeing patients so please ring again and ask to be seen before you take the colonoscopy route.  Its amazing how a small investigation by a GP could put your mind at rest.  If you are struggling to have a soft stool movement there are plenty of chemist's who could advise you on some medication to help you.  Good luck and let us know how you get on.  Carol

  • Hello mate,

I am 34 years old and am in the same situation as you I first noticed blood on my stool 16th December but also now have  stomach cramps, within the first couple of minutes of noticing blood in the toilet I was on Google and have been since last week it has utterly messed with my head! I as soon as I stopped googling alot of my anxiety went away.

I have been and seen the GP, had a examination - Bloods and stool sample came back fine, doctor asked me to do a FIT test which came back positive so was referred to the hospital for a emergency colonoscopy which I have tomorrow morning currently sipping this horrible drink!

Oh and of all the things I have googled the survivor stories sent my anxiety in to over drive!

Get back on to your GP and ask for a Colonoscopy.

Better to be safe then sorry

  • Hi mate thanks for the reply.

You're bang on about google and the stories. I've wanted to lock myself away and not do anything. My mental health has taken a battering. I'm waiting on my stool sample results but regardless I think I'm going to push and push for the FIT test and colonoscopy. It's on my mind 24/7. I was trying to stay positive but I found a tiny speck today and it just sent me into a meltdown again. I know statistically it's a lot more likely to be IBS or something like that but it's the aspect that it could be something worse that fills me with dread.

Hope all goes well tomorrow. Would you mind posting an update?

  • Hi Dor06

Thank you for your reply. I have googled straining when trying to poop and did see that the blood can be a side effect. I then question what is a strain and am I actually straining? Am I forcing it more than natural or am I at a natural level of strain. My mental health really has taken a battering. I feel like locking myself away in my bed at times. I've been to my doctors in person but I think I'm going to go again. I can't live like this everyday.

Just clicked on your profile I hope your husband is doing well x

  • Yes mate hard to function at home with the family and in work as it was always on my mind.

    Will update you tomorrow.

  • Hi Norman is doing well considering his stage of lung cancer but we're older and it seems the younger generation rely more on Dr Google rather than the real one, so showing my age here!  Life is worth living and it's hard at the moment with all that is going on so maybe we dwell more than we should on our aches, pains and natural habits.  So the only person to help is your GP, give them a call, tell them it's affecting your daily life and ask to see them.  Are you aware that we have nurses on this forum who you can call?  They will give you professional advice and help you to get better.  Once again, good luck and be proactive in your own life.  Carol

  • Hi Lee,

    Had my Colonoscopy today,

The result was good I had a 10mm Polyp removed the consultant does not think it's anything  to worry about but had it sent off to be checked anyway.

    I have now been discharged.

Prior to the test I spoke with the consultant and asked what is the likelihood of this being serious like cancer, his reply was due to my age very low but it has happend before so I have done the right thing coming in the get checked out.

He thought it would be piles or a Polyp.

Stay off Google mate and just get checked out, I believe I caused most of my symptoms by stressing googling day and night.
