Tongue issues looking for advice

Hi, I know I won't get a diagnosis here but I'm generally just looking for advice if possible. I am 32 year old female with 2 children, I am trying to quit smoking and never drink alcohol.

I went and seen my doctor around 2 weeks ago due to me having this constant feeling that something is stuck on the right side of my tounge. The doctor had a looked and said it could be oral thrush and gave me a prescription for daktarin.

I then found out I was 4 weeks pregnant and could not use the medication so I continued with a mouth wash, I unfortunately had a miscarriage so I started to use the daktarin again.

ive still got the feeling that something is on the side of my tounge and if I feel the bottom of my mouth with my tounge there feels like there is a small spot under it but it is very small. Also my right ear when feels wet but when I clean my ear there is nothing there.

I do suffer health anxiety and have a horrible habit of googling everything (which I know is wrong).

I have no pain at all, it's just an annoying sensation. I am trying to get into the doctors again but with COVID it's very hard.

Does this sound like cancer or am I over thinking things.

Thank you for taking your time in reading this.

  • Hello smiler88

i could have written this myself!! I also have a feeling that something is on the side of my tongue and I'm sure I can see something too. This has been going on since the new year. I have seen the doctor in person and seen the dentist in person(3 times) I also had other symptoms, mine started out painful but the pain has now gone. I had tingling burning sensations all the way down that side of the tongue, which have also gone in this last week. Sometimes the whole of my tongue would feel like it was burning and also the roof of my mouth would be burning too, all at different intervals. I was 100% sure it was cancer. I'm 30 with 3 children and also smoke, also suffer with health anxiety so I know exactly how you feel, I want to give up smoking so bad but that's my calm relief(bad I know) but as of Tuesday just gone my dentist reassured me that everything on my tongue looks normal and she has no concerns of cancer. And that basically I need to move on from this. She did say I have gingivitis from the very first time I saw her and sometimes the nerves in my tongue affected by this could be causing these sensations, but if I wanted a second opinion to see my GP. Today has been my best day by far, just a little twinge every now and then this evening but I never thought I'd pass all the other symptoms I had experienced.
mid you can't see your GP maybe try your dentist, I didn't have a dentist but I have been able to get emergency appointments over the last few weeks which I am grateful for! I also had a lump on my neck which I was sure was part of my issues but that turns out to be a lipoma confirmed by ultrasound. My throat kept hurting(which doesn't for the last few days) my ear kept getting shooting pain, same side as tongue, but I'm pretty sure this is down to a piercing I had done few months back that still has not healed. Sorry for the long post but I hope it gives you some reassurance and good luck I hope you manage to get an appointment with a professional xxx

  • Hi

Thabk you for your reply I really appreciate it, I will definitely try my dentist if I have no luck with the doctor.

you have definitely reassured me that this isn't cancer, I can't thank you enough for your reply.

I always worrry about leaving my children and my anxiety has been really bad the last few weeks

    Thank you

  • That's ok hun, yes definitely they are very good at looking at changes inside the mouth.

the anxiety is so debilitating, since Tuesday I have been loads better, I do sit and wonder if they have missed something, but also telling myself that the dentist knew why I was there and was clear with her answer and that's what I have to take forward!!

I am exactly the same as you, my kids are everything and s to lol so young and would hate to leave them all behind!

fingers crossed everything will be ok hun. Let us know how you get on xxx

  • Thank you hun, I've sent an email to my gp today so hopefully I will get a call tomorrow, I will keep you updated x x
