Fit Test and colon cancer symptoms?

Hi all,

I'm a 33 year old male, and I wanted to post here because part of me is terrified, and part of me just needs to vent. I've been reading through many of the posts here (and Reddit), and it's extremely helpful. I think you've all done a fantastic job of putting minds at ease. I wanted to ask about some symptoms / issues I've been having and see if anyone can offer input while waiting for a diagnosis!

Over the last six months, my usually stubborn bowels became a lot more active, and a lot softer. I simply put that down to the fact I was eating twice as much as usual. Then, in November, I had an incident where upon passing stool, I suddenly passed a lot of blood. This repeated a week later, and then re-remerged in November.

A week ago, I sent a FIT test off and, while I wasn't told directly of the result, I was phoned a few days later to be scheduled an urgent Colonoscopy (within two weeks).

Now that immediately raised my eyebrows, and I'm aware that a good portion of FIT test positives don't turn out to be cancer.

But what has really terrified me is a sudden shift in bowel movements. For the last three days, I've been blocked up, with nothing but stringy stools. Now granted, I'm aware that's a sign of colon cancer, but I find it odd that I've gone from 'regular, soft, and okay sized', to 'stringy stools' in the space of a week! Is that normal with colon cancer? Or am I just dealing with constipation?

Adding to this mystery, I was originally advised to take Fybogel, a high fiber supplemant. I did this for about four days before I started becoming constipated. Part of me wonders if the fiber has amassed into some fecal Hindenburg, that now won't go anywhere. The laxative kind of worked at first, it led to a pretty uncomfortable pass, but since that point everything has been a mess!

Anyway, I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced symptoms like these, and had positive (or negative) outcomes. Other troubling signs appear to be absent - no sense of weakness, no severe stomach cramps (occasional pain on discomfort on my lower right side, but nothing to write home about), no sense of nausea. I'm really at a loss what to make of it all.

There is a family history of bowel cancer, polyups, and diverticulitis, but nothing at my age. Everyone has been in their 60s when checked. I smoked a pipe (but never inhaled) for a decade, and smoking cigarettes (and then a vipe) for around four years. I am, however, a drinker! And I've piled on weight in the last four-five years (from 12-19 stone).

And as you've all no doubt experienced, the waiting is the horrific!

  • Hello .I had bowel cancer and had many colonoscopies. You will be sent some pre  surgery medication to take for 3 days  with a diet sheet to completely empty your bowel for the investigation,You are able to watch the camera moving around the bowel and see everything that the doctor can see with immediate results. Its a short procedure and you can have a  sedative if you prefer. its a worry to have a fit test come back positive when the specimen is OK  But to  have the test come back OK when it wasnt is worse. Why  are the specimens  not  tested correctly. Bowel cancer is no longer just for the elderly because of our lifestyles,I have met a few younger peoplewho had bowel cancer and are fine now,Unfortunately the passing of blood is  a main symptom So I am glad you did not ignore this  and acted immediately as I did. That was over 10yrs ago,Bowel cancer takes a long time to develope which is good.My friend who was 65yrs of age  same as me who had the same symptoms as me 10yrs ago had a diagnosis of diverticulitus. So you just will not know untill your testI  Put it to the back of your mind if you can there is no point  worrying over something  that might not be there,I wish you well  and  you will be fine

  • You're right, for sure. I was more worried about the test coming back negative than positive, just because I was sure there was something wrong.

I'm glad you're doing strong, friend! My grandfather had bowel cancer, and my grandmother had diverticulitus, so it feels a bit like genetic lottery!

  • Did you ever find out what was wrong?

I'm in a similar situation and would be interested to hear how this turned out for you. Hope all is good.

  • Hi,

Sort of. I had a FIT test and a colonoscopy, and both came back in the clear. I still have peculiar symptoms, but it seems more likely to be IBS or IBD. Tests are currently ongoing, but nothing alarming so far.

I hope you manage to get checked and all goes well - as cliche as it sounds, the anxiety can sometimes be much worse than the symptoms!

  • Thank you, I appreciate you coming back to update.

I'm glad for you your tests came back clear, though I understand it's not great still having the symptoms and no explanation.

I'm trying to resist trying to self diagnose through the internet or getting too anxious, and seeing cases like yours that started similarly but didn't have a terrible outcome is a bit of reassurance that my worst fears might be wrong.
