hot breast and lump found - scared

Hello,

I have had a smallish lump in my breast for a couple of months but thought nothing of it and recently my breast started feeling hot and the lump hurting so much that I couldn't sleep on it so went to docs. She wasn't that helpful - just said "yes that's definitely a lump" then said she didn't think it was cancer as wasn't that hard but more raggedy feeling. She didn't explain why it was hot or painful but refered me to hospital for a scan within two weeks. Is she lying that it's not cancer when she knows it is or is this just normal procedure? I am freaking out waiting now for hospital appointment. She couldn't say why it was hot and painful - is this a good sign or not a good sign - any help appreciated!

  • Hi Sophie,

I can't comment on your symptoms but I had some pain in my armpit and contacted my GP after going through my family history and mentioning my Auntie had breast cancer before she was very quick to send me to the breast clinic. I believe this is their normal procedure and is classed as safety netting. So I wouldn't be to alarmed that you've been referred, it is always best to get It check I supposed, try and not worry too much regarding the appointment (I know it is harder said than done!) I hope it all goes well for you and it turns out to be nothing serious.

    take care

  • Thank you so much - I'm so adrift in this and am worrying so much that I've been referred - not sure what else can cause a big lump and hot boob except for cancer but maybe I'm  over reacting. I guess wait and see - two week wait ugggg. I hope you were okay in the end after finding the lump in your armpit? I think Covid / homeschooling/ madness hightens everything even more! No history of breast cancer in my family but I've had cervical low level cancer cells.

Thanks for responding to me! xx

    Hi Sophie,

I am sorry to hear about your worry. Your GP wouldn't have said that she didn't think that this was cancer, unless she felt sure that tis was the case. She has done the right thing in referring you for further tests, as it is impossible to be certain unless you have the results of various scancs and biopsy.

You do not say what age you are. This can have some bearing on the situation. There are other reasons for lumps which are less sinister, for example cysts or fibroadenomas. I know that this is a worrying stage, but try to keep yourself busy to help pass the waiting time and, whatever you do, try to steer clear of the internet. You don't have a diagnosis yet and you will only scare yourself further if you do this.

I sincerely hope that all turns out well for you Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
