2 week urgent Gynaecology referral

Hi

I'm worried sick. I have been referred to the rapid access clinic. I only found out about it when the hospital called to book my appointment. My GP did not bother contacting me at all.

I'm 48 and had early menopause 9 years ago. I did an ultrasound which showed I have a fibroid back then. I was on the contraceptive pill to protect my bones, as HRT didn't work for me - I was bleeding too often. In 2019 I decided to give HRT another go.and talked to my GP practice. They put me on cchrt Kiloflem without refering me for an ultrasound to check my fibroid. I had breakthrough bleeding on Kiloflem, which I reported to the GP. I was told it's normal. I was then prescribed Femoston Conti which has a higher level of progesterone. When I switched from Kiloflem to Femoston, I had a proper bleed. Again I reported it to the GP who said it was normal as 'they are messing with my hormones'. I seemed to have settled on Femoston. I have been taking it for 3 months now.

In December last year I saw a private GP as part of a BUPA private health assessment and mentioned the bleed. She advised that it would be a good idea to do an ultrasound to make sure the uterine lining is not too thick.

I asked for a referred from my NHS GP, who advised that I should do it privately because of Covid. Anyway I paid for one privately. Unfortunately because of the fibroid, the lining was distorted and it was not possible to measure the thickness. The results showed that the fibroid has vascular activity and the report mentioned a strip of fluid trapped in the lower part. After talking to the GP (not the same one, my GP practice has quite a few) following the results, she said she is sure there's nothing to worry about but she would write to the speacialist to ask if further tests are required - that was on Dec 17. I was advised to call within 2 to 3 weeks if I haven't heard from them, which I did. I was told by the receptionist there was nothing concrete yet. Then a week later, the hospital called me to book my urgent appointment.

I was very shocked - still am- , as I had no discussion with my GP. I didn't hear from them since my 17th Dec phone apppointment. For more than a year they have been telling me it's normal, they did not even offer to get it checked and now they are suspecting the worse.

I'm freaking out. I have been googling a lot, making myself sick and yet I can't seem to stop.

My appointment in on this coming Tuesday - I feel like throwing up.

Sorry about the long post but I can't talk about it to anyone close yet.

Thank you!

  • Hi Im going through similar but as Im in Scotland its different here.  I had unexpected bleed on 5 Dec and I saw GP on 7th as I finished my menopause 15+years ago after early menopause with no bleeding.  She examined me and sent urgent referral to gynae at hospital. I waited until 8th Jan, when gynae surgeons secretary called me to give me appointment on Mon 11th.  GP doesnt have any further contact with me as its gynae who deals with it all.   I had a transvaginal ultrasound, a Hysteroscopy, an internal examination and then a biopsy was taken. the doc talked about a lot before during and after but was too much for me to remember so missed a fair bit. Anyway Im still waiting for results. I called his secretary at hospital and she said urgent results take 4 weeks or more. It feels like a long long time.up and down.  But Ive found talking with others on here, reading other info they have in different sections and support from a Cancer Chat moderater and other people waiting for results a huge help and calming influence.  I hope you grt things moving and feel calmer soon. Take Care Jen

  • Thank you Jen for sharing. Your post helps. Did the hysteroscopy hurt a lot? I hope you get your results soon and it's nothing serious. 4 weeks wait is a long time.

    Take care.

  • Hi, no probs, seeing that your not alone does help.  I have read on here, that it has hurt or been uncomfortable for some people but I can honestly say talked with the nurses all the way through it and didnt feel it or the biopsy being taken at all.  I had cramps and was uncomfortable that evening that didnt come back after that and I had some bleeding on and off for 7 days, like a light period really.  Thanks so do we.  Its good to hear how everything goes so please keep us posted on how you get on. Cheers Jen

  • Many thanks Jen, will do. Take care.

    Hi Jen

I just came back from my appointment. I had an ultrasound again just in case they would be able to see the lining. They couldn't because of the fibroid - nothing new, that's what the report of the ultrasound I did in December stated. The doctor then checked the neck of the womb and said it looks normal. She said she will bring me back for a hysteroscopy/biopsy within two weeks. Basically, the wait continues for me. I am frustrated - why didn't they try to do the hysteroscopy today itself since it was unlikely they would see the lining via ultrasound. I did ask how long it normally takes to wait for biopsy results, she said within 2 weeks. Potentially at least another 4 weeks wait for me.

I hope it's not long for you to wait now.

    Take care

  • Sorry to hear they didn't do the Hysteroscopy and you've got to wait longer.  I feel sometimes they dont consider patients anxieties, they should have made it clear and explained things and what, why and when you would get them.  I feel very lucky getting mine at the one appointment.  I'm going yo start watching the postman from Monday onwards.  Stay safe x

  • Hi Jen, someone called earlier and I am now booked in for tomorrow at another hospital in London. My anxiety level just went up again, l am literally shivering but at least the wait has been reduced a bit. I am signing up to their digital initiative - I might be able to access the results online if I am set up on time. Take care. K

  • Hi thats great its now tomorrow. Its better to get it done and you kniw where you stand. I've not heard of the digital initiative but sounds a very handy utility. All the best, would love to know how you get on. J

  • Thanks Jen, will let you know.

    Hi Jen

I had my hysteroscopy done earlier. No biopsy was taken as the lining is very thin. I was reassured by the lady who did the prodecure that the lining looks fine. I am going to be discharged back to my GP. The bleeding is because of HRT basically.  Thank god!

The procedure lasted at most 5mins. As advised I took 2 paracetamol tablets at least 1 hour before the procedure. It didn't hurt, only the last minute or so there was a lot of pressure in the lower tummy region. I don't seem to have bled but I have some very mild cramping sensations. They gave me a maternity pad to wear because of the fluid coming out. There were 2 of them in the room and they were both great at reassuring me during the procedure talking about mundane things.

I was told if I bleed again on HRT, I should be referred back again for the usual checks and was also advised to ask my GP to refer me to a menopause clinic as they are best suited to find the best HRT remedies.

I hope all goes well for you too. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Do let us know when you hear back. Fingers crossed.

    Take care
