Received my breast clinic appointment.. anxious

I don't usually post anything personal but I'm feeling a little lost at the moment and hoping for someone ina similar situation..

I'm 26 and found a lump in my left breast about 6 weeks ago, I went to the GP who felt that lump and another so has referred me to the breast clinic. I've just got my letter through for my appointment on the 8th Feb.

I've got a long family history of breast cancer, among other cancers..

I would just like abit of an understanding of what is going to happen at the appointment and thereafter if its not good news,  I feel very out of control and maybe just abit of understanding for if the unexpected happens. I've only told my husband about this as I have a close family member (very close in age to myself) on end of life care at the moment due to cancer and I don't want to worry anyone without reason.

Thanks, A

  • Hello A and welcome to the forum.

There is some useful information here which explains what may happen at your appointment but if you'd like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Hopefully some of our members will be along soon to offer their support and share their experiences as well.

Wishing you all the best for the 8th.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi A,

I have just read your post so thought I could share some of my experience with appointments and what to expect.

What will happen is you'll have an ultrasound and/or mammogram on the day. From this they will have a good idea what it is. There's a good chance it's nothing serious and you'll be told that on the day. If they suspect anything you'll have a biopsy. This is a minor procedure and you will feel nothing. Maybe a little pressing but no pain. If this is the case the results take about 10 and to come back. You'll then get a phone call or letter asking you to attend the clinic again. It's no usual to have these results over the phone.

Depending on the outcome of this, you'll then discuss any treatment plans etc that will be suitable for you.

I can see why you'd feel anxious and be scared. I was, and with your history you're bound to be worried.

Stay busy, distracted and positive. Stay off Google. It won't help you. Keep talking to others and here there are plenty to help you through this. Reach out.

If this turns out to be something to worry about message me back. I'm through the diagnosis, chemo and start rads the same day of your appointment. I would not wish breast cancer on anyone but I got through it and although I had bad days, I had many good ones too.

You will be scared and worried. But right now you don't know and try and stay with that.

Sending love. Keep in touch xxx
