Subungal Melanoma - Nail Biopsy

Hi all,

I recently had a nail biopsy done on the middle finger of my right hand. The dermatologist that I saw wants to rule out melanoma (as do I, of course). The surgeon removed my whole fingernail for the procedure and then put it back to act as a natural bandage. My question is - does anyone else have  experience of this surgery? If so, how long did it take for your finger take for you to be able to use your finger again? I am two weeks post surgery and my finger is still a little numb and I haven't really used it yet!

Thank you x

  • Hi Emlizv,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. Firstly I hope it's not too long for you to wait to find out your results.

This sounds like quite an uncomfortable procedure - unfortunately I'm not able to offer any advice or guidance about timescales - if you're speaking to your doctor again soon then do discuss this with them. Alternatively it may be helpful to speak to one of our nurses. You can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi

Can I ask what the biopsy was like? I'm due to have this procedure on my thumb tomorrow and am feeling really scared! Especially of the local anaesthetic injections!

    thanks

  • Hello!

I realise that this is reply is very, very late - you will have had your biopsy now! How did it go? The recovery was quite tough, but my nail has now grown back. I have been told that it was not subungal melanoma, thank goodness. It's melanonychia The line on my nail is still there.

Hope all is well with you.

  • Hi yes the biopsy is all done and I'm very relieved to also have the all clear - very happy for you too! My nail bed is a bit of a mess so no idea if the nail will grow back normally or not but time will tell!
