Soft Palate Biopsy

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has experience of a biospy in the soft palate of the mouth using diathermy which I think is like electro cautery?? There's a user on here called clara56 who has posted about it before but other than that I can't find any references to using this method in the mouth.

I was referred by my GP to see an oral surgeon consultant as I've got what I now know is a papilloma in my mouth. I'm booked in for an excisional biopsy using diathermy in a few days time. I've scared myself witless looking at explanations of what that actually means but wondered if anyone here could talk from experience. I know it involves heat but when I've googled it (I know I know!!) it looks like quite a crude method. I'd rather they said they'd just cut it out with a scalpel but they must have their reasons for their chosen method.

I tend to worry about one thing at a time so I'm not focussing on getting the biopsy results yet, just the pain I'll be facing after the biopsy!

  • Hi, just wanted to bump this thread - if anyone has had electrosurgery/diathermy to take a biopsy in the mouth please let me know what it was like.

  • Hi

Please dont be scared it really isnt the worst thing to have done believe me there is worse.

First it will be completly numb after a local.

They will take a punch biopsy which is tiny. And because the palate cant be stitched they use the lazer to seal it off to prevent bleeding and promote healing.

The lazer feels like a wee thump which makes you jump a bit lol, but only about 3 zaps and your done.

It can take longer to heal than a stitched biopsy, just keep rinsing with slightly salty water and keep your mouth clean as much as possible. Hope you dont smoke!!! If you do then give that a miss.

Hope it goes well for you and get a good result. Its a horrible time waiting. Keep calm xxx

PS; Buy some dispersable co codamol or liqiud pain meds if you can have these of course.

  • Hi and many thanks for your reply. It's going to be an excisional biopsy which I gather means removing the whole thing. They don't tell you much up front probably to try and avoid worrying! Thanks for the warning that there may be a thump when the electric zapper does its thing.  I'll try and keep as still as possible.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply, it is appreciated.

  • Hi

If you are having electrocautery then you probably wont have the lazer as the cautery will seal as it goes

You will have either a nurse or junior dr holding your head in position and possible holding your tongue out of the way.The chair is same as at dentist so your head will be against a headrest.

The procedure is really short and will be over before you know it.

I had 50% of my soft palate done all the way back to my tonsil during my surgery and that made the biopsy like a piece of cake in comparison.

The area may look black after procedure but dont worry thats normal and will go as it heals.

Good luck and treat it like a bad day at the dentist getting a tooth out is worse :-) xx

  • Hi

I've had my biopsy on my soft palate on the right side on Monday and it's causing me teeth pain , just wondering if this is normal as im still on pain killers .

I had 3 small mounds removed so I'm hoping the teeth pain will resolve

    thank you

  • Hi Sera

Sorry to hear you are having tooth pain.

The top and bottom jaws are quite a network of nerves so it is possible a nerve has become iritated. I dont know if you had injections to numb palate it is possible that is source of iritation.

But if it doesnt sesolve soon might be a good idea to see your dentist.

I found a combination of paracetamol and ibuprofen was best it calms the inflamation. Thats if you can take these of course.

Oh and avoid very cold drinks.

Hope you are painfree soon take care xx

  • Thank you

I did have an injection beforehand and it seemed that as soon as the anethestic wore away the pain started leading to my bottom and top back teeth aching as if I had tooth ache but it was all my teeth on that ride side where  I had the removal

    Its a bizzaire feeling

Thank you for replying , I've phoned up the hospital in London and the lady said if it doesn't resolve itself by Monday as it will be 7 days to then give them a ring and book myself in for a check up

  • Hi Sera72 , how did you get on following you biopsy?

    KR

  • Hi joc0jo

my mouth is feeling a lot better thank you , I still haven't been given my results so I'm thinking is no news is good news . The scaring it's left I think has gone down a nerve to my front right tooth so if I hit the scar tissue with food it send a shock down to that tooth and the one next to it x

im hoping that will ease in time

    thank you for asking

  • That is great to hear and yes I am sure to hear nothing from them can only mean they consider the treatment complete for you.   I am haviing a biopsy to the throat next monday  but under general aneasthetic and I am very anxious.  I was searching for anyone else who had problems in the soft palate area and only you and one other appeared on the search, the other person has not been here for 2 years though so they are also over their surgery and enjoying life,  and rightly so .   So good that your lumps were swftly removed , I was really hoping that would happen with me but it seems mine is a biopsy only  oh andI I  have a MRI on saturday before my Biospy . My lump is very visible at the back soft palate to the left of my uvula red and angry and slowly getting bigger and is now getting painful  whereas there was no real pain before,, before being only weeks ago before this whole thing went from a niggle to perhaps sinister  uff! ..
