Awaiting needle biopsy results: should I stop HRT?

Following routine mammogram just before Xmas I was called back to check. 3 mammograms and ultrasound and then needle biopsy on Friday, have appointment to get results next week. Should I stop HRT or carry on? It feels wrong to keep taking it, just finished the pack (progestogen pills and oestrogen gel).

I’m 53, otherwise healthy, been on HRT 15 months... my mum had oestrogen-sensitive breast cancer full mastectomy years ago. Happy to stop HRT but not sure whether cold turkey is best or gradual reduction, what is standard practice?

  • Hello Seekingwisdom,

Welcome to the forum. The best person to speak to about this would be your doctor so you should contact them for advice or speak to them at your next appointment.

I hope your results come back ok next week,

  • of course, in an ideal world, where it was possible to talk to a doctor! I have rung and emailed the surgery but nobody has responded...

I eventually  managed to get some advice from the breast clinic nurse but had to wait 3 days until they opened, during which time I was worrying...

Surely it should be possible to give some general guidance in some help forum such as this? Otherwise what is it here for?!

  • Unfortunately we cannot comment on whether you can come off HRT or not. Only your doctor can fully understand your options, as they know more about you and your medical history. The forum is a place for people affected by cancer to connect and share experiences.

As you know, health services are in high demand due to the pandemic. It's great that you did manage to get some advice from a nurse and I hope that has helped in some way.

    All the best,
