Smear test under local anaesthetic

Hi, I have just turned 60 and was called for my smear  early last year, but the pain was to great and they  could not do it, and was given a diazepam to take next time but still couldn't get it done. The 3rd attempt was first the March but covid came and it never happened to my relief. I have now been called for my final reminder on 9the Feb and am petrified. Phoned doctor to explain but not heard back. Was wanting to ask if possible if can get done under local anesthetic, do you think they would allow this. Dont see me having done any other way. I want it done.

Thank you

  • Hello Worried_hilary,

A big welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear about the pain you felt when you had your smear and I can imagine this has now left you really worried and scared that the same thing would happen again. It's important that you still attend your appointment. You did the right thing in phoning the doctor as they will be in the best position to advise you on whether getting it done under local anaesthetic is a possible option. If you haven't heard back on Monday, perhaps you could try and ring them again and explain that you really need an answer to this?

I hope that you manage to get your smear done this time and that it is pain free.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie

My doctor phoned me back and she said that i could not get appointment with hospital at the present time and would be on waiting list for year(and no anesthetic),so I have agreed to give the pressies ago before I have the smear test now on 23rd feb. Going to have diazepam before it again. Thank you for your message and will let you know how it goes. Still really scared but know I need to have it.

  • Really p****d off that women have to endure pain for a smear.

I was diagnosed with CIN3 about 30 years ago & had the necessary treatment.

In ther intervening years I've had yearly smear test - while uncomfortable, I've endured them without complaint.

I then had yearly smear tests without complaint

As you age yuor cervix changes and conventional smear tests become very painful.

I've hear about recent developments where we can swab for cervical cancer at home which I welcome - please can someone advise when this will become mainstream
