Brown spot under toenail - Subungual Melanoma?

Hi all.

Can anyone advice pls, share your experiences.

I had a nail fungus for about 2-3 years. but never paid attention to it. Recently, when I shook nail polish off, I noticed a brownish spot about 4mm×4mm. I immeidately went to see GP, who suggested I use some treatment for nail fungus and after 2 weeks, if nothing changes, come back for refferal. The brownish spot has become more "round" with clear boundary, and brown in clour. cant say it got smaller or bigger ‍♀️. so today GP reffered to Dermatologist via cancer route. I dont remember I had a nail traums, my shoes are not tight either.

Can it be subungual melanoma? I am 34 white female if it matters

Extremely worried.

Thank you

  • Hello Konfeta27

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting on a referral to see a specialist after recently noticing some changes in one of your nails. It's understandable that you're feeling concerned. This period of waiting for appointments can be difficult.

It's possible to develop melanoma under the nail but this is in fact very rare. However, you've done exactly the right thing in seeking advice from your GP and I do hope that you don't have to wait too long to see the Dermatologist.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're most welcome to give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
