Breast Biopsy at 21

Hi all

I found a lump just under 2 weeks ago now that my GP was pretty certain was just a fibroadenoma but decided to refer me to the breast clinic for diagnosis. I had my appointment today and was seen briefly by a consultant who seemed pretty convinced it was benign and sent me off to the radiologist for an ultrasound. However he said he couldn't definitively tell me it was not cancer from the way it appeared on the ultrasound and he explained but I didn't really get it, so he decided to do a biopsy. When I saw the consultant after it felt like the whole tone had changed, she reassured me that it is likely to be benign still because of my age etc, and then after a chat with a breast care nurse about wellbeing, support network, family history etc she booked me in for a follow up appointment with my results.

I just now don't know what to think because now it feels like I have something to worry about? I may be wrong but I swear fibroadenomas are usually diagnosed from ultrasound, I don't really get why I needed to have a biopsy when throughout this whole process everyone seemed convinced it was benign. My lump is about 2.5cm and it is very mobile, I'm 21, my armpits etc are fine, no other symptoms, which indicates it is benign. I just feel like nothing was indicating I needed further tests, until he saw the ultrasound. The atmosphere kind of changed.

Anyone had an experience similar?

  • Hello maismountain,

I hope you won't have to wait too long for your biopsy results and for your follow up appointment. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting for these important results.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
