Low blood count 3 year old

Hi everyone,

after some advice. My 3 year old has been suffering with chest infections since Nov 2020, he was given antibiotics which didnt clear, he had a blood test and showed low white blood cells and that he is anemic. He was asked for a repeat test 2 weeks later which still showed low cells. We have since had 2 futher tests and his count is still low so we have been referred to a childrens specialist hospital. Over the last couple of weeks he has lost his appetite, has a lost a little weight. He gets really hot and sweaty when he falls asleep. He complains of stomach pains nearly everyday. Ths hosp xrayed him and said it showed inflammed lung but said that was due to a chest infection. I know i shouldnt google but all the symptoms are showing leukemia, my question is, would leukemia be picked up on the blood test or would further tests be needed? any advice would be appreciated while i wait for our referral.

  • Welcome to the forum Tcm2020 although I'm sorry to read what your little one is going through at the moment. It must be very stressful.

Our members can't really answer this question I'm afraid but our team of cancer nurses may be able to offer some insight so if you'd like to speak with them about this, do give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Do be sure to ask your son's medical team about this as well as they're in the best position to give you the answers and peace of mind you're seeking at this time.

I hope the referral doesn't take too long to come through.

    Best wishes to you both,
