Tongue cancer Symptoms

Hello, would anybody be able to share some of their symptoms of tongue cancer please? I am having some symptoms which I will list and I'm absolutely petrified. I'm 30 years old with 3 children age from 1-8 and I'm scared I am going to leave them behind so early in their lives.

Tingly sore on the side of the tongue(was persistent now comes and goes)

sore red throat(pain comes and goes

lump in neck(no pain and pea size)

sometimes but not often dull ear pain last no longer than 30 seconds at a time

inceeased heartburn

whitish coating on the back of the tongue

if anyone can help I would appreciate it, my anxiety is immense! I can't stop googling and reading other people's stories. Just want to know if any of my symptoms are similar with others. I have an ultrasound on my neck tomorrow and I'm really worried. Thankyou for reading xx

  • Is there anyone out there that's gone through this! I'm literally freaking out today, my anxiety is through the roof. This little red sore thing on my tongue is still there 3 weeks later, it's doesn't hurt so much any more just a weird dry tingly sensation! :(

  • Hi my only symptom was a smallish lump on the back of my tongue that I thought was an ulcer as it was sore and painful and it wasn’t getting any better after a few weeks.

Have you seen a doctor in person?

  • Hi April

thankyou for responding to me so quickly. I have like a red circle on the side of my tongue, it was really painful to start with, metal taste and burning sensation. I saw my dentist and my doctor who both were not concerned, dentist said I had swollen tonsils and looked like mild tonsillitis. The majority of my symptoms have calmed down now, it's just this little red think, not so much a lump, can't work out if it has a centre like an ulcer. I also have a lump on my neck which I'm waiting for ultrasound results and blood tests to check for diabetes but I'm so scared x

  • I know waiting for results is the worst thing but at least you will get your answers soon about your neck. My dentist was worried straight away when she saw mine they are so good at finding things so that’s a good sign they aren’t worried and have given you other explanations.

  • That does reassurE me a little. My dentist was just concerned about my gums and that I have gingivitis. I'm just worried that this ulcer red looking think is serious, even though the symptoms have eased slightly. It's been there about 3 weeks now, like I said it was really painful when it first appeared and isn't so painful now, I wake up in the morning and that part of my tongue is dry. Iv read on google so much and I have convinced myself it's cancer. I'm pretty sure I'm giving myself other symptoms because I have read them. I find when I eat and drink it eases it and I don't notice it's there at all. I don't know wether any of this is a good sign or not. I had gengigel to try and heal it and it's not working so now I'm trying bonjela until I get my results back and speak to my doctor again! The waiting is so hard! X

  • If you have seen the dentist, try not to panick too much, easier said than done I know. Dentists are fully trained to spot the signs of mouth and soft tissue cancer and would refer you for biopsy.  Fingers crossed for you xx

  • Thankyou. I am trying to stay positive purely because I asked my dentist out right, "do you think this is cancer" and she said no! The same with my tonsil, I said the same and she said no! I suffer with health anxiety and it's really hitting me this time!

  • I suffer health anxiety too , currently waiting for results of bloods taken due to unsusul and unexplained fist sized bruises so I understand how scary it can be.

I used to work as a dental nurse for 7 years and I would have faith that the dentist would spot unusual signs or symptoms but as you know. If you're not happy you can always get other opinions, wishing you a happy and safe outcome and please try not worry yourself sick (like I'm doing!)

  • It sucks doesn't it?!

oh no that's not good, I hope your outcome is good too. When did you have your bloods taken? Fingers crossed for you.

when I saw the dentist 2 weeks ago I walked out really happy and content with what she had said! But then I fall back onto google and I know I shouldn't but it's so easy to do and I am terrified! Especially if my ultrasound for my lump comes back abnormal then I know I need to worry even more!

the thing is I saw her once when she diagnosed me with gingivitis and then saw her less than a week later panicking, and she was happy with what she saw other than my gums, it's so hard to tell yourself not to worry!

  • I had them taken on Thursday and they will be back on Thursday this week... I'm terrified. Keep thinking the worst and worrying about by young children and family. Every pain I have no I'm thinking oh that's another symptom - thanks to me googling over and over again I think I'm now hyper sensitive to any feelings I have!!!

I will keep an eye out for you updating re your lump - the wait for results is horrible. So grateful for the NHS but the waiting times can be such an added stress.
