Lump in the breast post miscarriage

Just before Christmas 2020 I miscarried my baby at 13 weeks, I had sore achy breasts my entire pregnancy, they started to go back to normal within a couple of weeks.
Over the past 1/2 weeks I noticed sharp, shooting pains and tenderness around in my left nipple.
My nipple has also changed shape and inverted, which is unusual for me.
My left breast appears smaller, last night I though I would have a feel and noticed a hard kidney Bean sized lump just at the side of my nipple, it is under quite a bit of tissue and doesn't move when I prod it. My left breast constantly hurts but my right doesn't and that one feels fine.
I called my doctor this morning and as I'm 5/6 weeks post miscarriage they asked for me to wait for my first period (not happening yet) to see if the lump disappears by then.
I assume it is due to hormones but I'm worried as this is an unknown feeling to me and would love some peace of mind or if anyone has any advice, would be very grateful.

  • Hi, I've come across your post because I'm having the exact same thing happening to me 4 weeks post miscarriage.  Can I ask what your outcome was?  I really hope everything was okay for you x

  • Hey,

I am so sorry for your loss, I hope you are okay and have support during this awful time :(

I believe you get lumps and bumps in your breasts during pregnancy and after miscarriage too due to hormonal changes they tend to change too, so it can be normal. At least this is what I read during research at the time, I'm in no way a professional, but I hope this might help!

So I got back in touch with my doctor (spoke to someone else) as I had my first period and the lump still had not gone.
I was booked in straight away for a scan on my breasts, I have a cyst in the one where I could feel a lump, it is binyne and okay!

maybe keep an eye on it and let your doctor know, you know your body best and it's always better to check and I'm sure your doctor will agree.

hope everything will be okay with you!

  • Thank you so much for replying, that's great to hear abouts yours!  I have seen my doctor and they've referred me to the breast clinic next Friday, so fingers crossed x

  • No problem at all, wish you all the best! X
