Groin lump for the last 10 years

My partner has had a lump on his pubic area for at least the last 10 years (he says possibly more, he doesn't remember a time not having it.) He's 21, a smoker and uses Marujana regularly. He's noticed over the last week it's become more noticeable and more uncomfortable which prompted him to have a Dr appointment today. She said it's positive that he's had it for such a long time but has referred him for bloods and an ultrasound- she says this is because the lump is hard and does not move. The lump is around the size of a 5p piece. He gets hot at night however the GP put that down to the fact we both radiate a lot of heat whilst we're sleeping, we both wake up quite hot. He's not have any other symptoms and is generally well.

I'm losing sleep over this- the ultrasound might not be for 4 weeks. I'm so desperate for answers but trying to stay positive. I've found myself googling for hours trying to convince myself it isn't anything sinister. Has anyone else has a similar experience?

  • Hello Alix and welcome to the forum.

It's good your partner got this lump checked out after noticing it had changed. I know being referred can seem scary but hopefully when the time comes the ultrasound will show the lump is no cause for concern.

Googling is not our friend in situations like these as it tends to show the worse case scenarios and increase anxiety and worry as a result. Living with the unknown is always a challenge, even more so when the pandemic is causing delays, but try to stay positive and not fixate on this if you can. I know that's easier said than done but many of our members have been in similar situations so will understand what you're going through at the moment and hopefully you'll hear from them soon.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you for your response.

I know Google is definitely giving me the worst case scenario, he had shingles as a child so I'm wondering if it's a swollen lymph node that hasn't gone down. He's got a blood test this afternoon and another telephone appointment this week so hopefully with have some answers soon. I'm a catastrophiser aswell so the anxiety is killing me!
