Worried about MRI results - overthinking?

Hi guys,

im just posting really because I'm hoping someone has been through/knows how I'm feeling on this one.

I have suffered from migraines for about 10 years and have never had any tests for these, they stopped for about 2 years but around 6 months ago they returned. I therefore went to the GP who referred me to the neurology department. I had an MRI scan in November and a month later received a letter saying 'the mri did not reveal any significant abnormality but we'd like to repeat the MRI with contrast this time just to make sure'. This obviously freaked me out and got me overthinking, but I couldn't seem to get any info out of the consultant secretary as to why I needed this!! fast forward another month and I've had the second mri, and when it had finished the radiographer said 'you'll receive these results a lot quicker than last time' 'have you seen your consultant? He'll be able to explain results'

This all has me worried and overthinking that I have some kind of brain tumour, don't know how I'm going to get through waiting for my results. Worried they saw something on the first scan and needed to double check it before telling me...

  • Hi there, the waiting is the worst but don't overthink what people say.  Firstly secretaries are not allowed to tell you anything, only the consultant will have the full results and he will write the report.  My understanding is that the second scan with dye can show more information, so for instance you can have an x Ray which is clear but they may decide to be more thorough to ensure that nothing shows up that the original scan hasn't shown.  As you have had one scan the results will be quicker because he already has the original information in his possession.  Good luck, migraines are not pleasant so my sympathy goes out to you, hope all is well.  Best wishes, Carol
