Cyst or sinister? lump on tonsil. Please help.

Hi I'm 40 female, I Quit smoking 10ish years ago light drinker ( 1 wine before a meal) . Slightly underweight.  And have a lump on my tonsil that looks like a small pea sized cyst.  Its been there 8 months ( + ....thats when I noticed it) dismissed as a tonsil stone by my gp then.

Now my dentist has sent an urgent referral to the oral dept. Im being seen next Wednesday. I am absolutely beside myself with worry. If not the worst, what could it be? Any reassurance would be great...... Ive gotta hold myself together for my baby boy x

No sore throat, its not changed significantly....

  • Personally for me, I am terrified. About 3 days ago I discovered a small, pea sized lump like yourself, but only below my jaw.

I'm 17 and absolutely terrified that it could be cancer. Probably the same as yourself . Anyway I'm sorry I can't give any personal advice but fingers crossed your okay, me too.

  • Get a gp appointment hun, just to put your mind to rest. I hope to not sound patronising..... but I think at 17 its highly unlikely to be your worst  fears xx

  • Just to update for anyone in a similar situation.  I was place on the 2 week pathway. Which scared the living daylights out of me  I was seen today by the oral surgery department.  I've been told it's nothing to worry about. But to get an appointment with ENT anyway because they might be interested  ( apparently I have no tonsils to speak of ....)

  • Hello timeflies80

its good that you have got an ENT referral and hopefully when you are seen it will give you peace of mind.

I am 30 and a smoker, I am forever freaking that I have cancer... why don't I give up smoking?? It calms my nerves, ridiculous I know! I have recently noticed that one of my tonsils is larger than the other, I was at the dentist asking for an oral check up when she said they both look swollen and red like mild tonsillitis, I had no pain to begin with and since then I have had mild on and off pain... that was 2 weeks ago. I'm terrified I have cancer too. I have had all sorts of different issues going on inside my mouth which has led me to believe that I have oral cancer... my doctor doesn't seem to think so, so therefore hasn't referred me! I had bloods done in November which were clear and having another set of bloods done on Friday.... FBC and diabetes check??? I also have a pea size lump in my neck on the opposite side to my convinced swollen tonsil, I had an ultrasound on that on Monday and still waiting results... I feel like my doctor is checking everything else except my throat and mouth..  no referral.

I hope you don't mind me posting on here too. Sorry I couldn't give much advice.

good luck with your appointment when you receive it and keep us updated, and always here for a listening ear if need be xx
