Irregular, hard breast lump with grainy texture

Hi,

I guess I am just curious if anyone has similar symptoms to mine. I've just had urgent referral to breast clinic but unfortunately I live in Scotland and we don't have the 2-week assurance. I'm told it's a 5 week wait which feels torturous.

I am 43 and found a lump in my breast... It starts under my nipple and extends out to my outer lower breast. It's odd-shaped, very firm and kind of rough feeling all over. It also appears to have come out of nowhere as with the size it is I can't imagine how I couldn't have felt it before now. My GP says she is concerned due to it being irregular, hard, sizeable and with a grainy texture so told me she was doing urgent referral.

I know 90% of lumps are benign but I can't help but worry.

  • Hi, I felt exactly what you're feeling, in the same location also just last month. I'm 21, so I am younger than you, however one thing I didn't do that would've settled my anxiety sooner is have a feel of the opposite breast, if you are feeling the same thing there in a similar area chances are you are feeling fibrous tissue. I did this the morning of my appointment & that kept me at ease. I know the wait feels so long & I'm really sorry you're having to wait that long too, but please have an examination done of the opposite breast. It Felt grainy & lumpy just under my nipple extending vertically out to my lower outer quadrant. Almost like the head of a cauliflower haha. The rest of my breast felt like rice pudding tmi.
I hope that helps you feel more at ease xx

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the response

Yes, I compared breasts and the GP examined both - it's definitely only in one breast but it's a reassuring description you gave me, like cauliflower yes!!

I read that being peri-menopausal can cause hormonal changes so maybe it will be something like fibrous tissue.

  • Yes it can & a lot of changes happen esp around the nipple for women your age x

i found the best way to examine myself was standing up with one arm behind my head & patting using the flats of my fingers and not the tips as that can make you press on and feel things inaccurately. I really hope it's nothing serious & all goes well for you as usually it is fine xx

i hope they sort that lipoma out too!! How uncomfortable :((

  • Hey [@osd77]‍

How did you get on?  Did your breast clinic appointment reassure you everything is fine?

  • Hi there,

Yes, thanks. It was a 6cm cyst which they drained there and then so all was well.

  • Hey [@osd77]‍

Thanks so much for the response!!!! I haven't been able to eat or sleep all weekend.  Can I just ask one more question pls.... was it mobile or immobile? And was it an oval, round, or oblong shape?

my appointment is tomorrow... I genuinely have a very very bad feeling :( x

  • It was mobile.. It felt irregular and bumpy, not round or oval, and the GP commented on how it felt too. It was also rock hard, didn't yield to pressure. That, of course, had me fearing the worst. However, on the mammogram and ultrasound it was clearly round. Must just have been where it was that made it feel otherwise.

I totally understand that. I had siked myself up so much for dealing with bad news that I felt surprise before relief when I got the results!

Wishing you well tomorrow, please come back and post how you get on x

  • Hi, I was wondering if you can help I'm new to this. So terrified and scared. I have a large lump on the lower part of my breast. I have been also referred to breast clinic. Did your lump feel like a balloon when touching. What size would you say it is? Was it bigger than a golf ball or smaller.

    i am so scared :(

  • My lump felt hard, not like a balloon. The nurse doing the ultrasound measured it and it was 6cm so pretty big... Probably a little bigger than a golf ball.

I know it's easy for me to say now but in the majority of cases, breast lumps turn out to be something benign.

I remember how worrying a time it is. Try to keep busy and distracted and please avoid Dr Google

    Take care x
