Fine needle biopsy procedure

Hi,

My partner has had a fine needle biopsy on a swollen lymph node in his groin. The procedure wasn't done using a Doppler.

He is now really worried as the puncture wound from the needle is a good 4/5cm above the swollen node. As in the wound is around his pubic area and the node is closer to his top thigh.

Is this normal?? He's been waiting for the appointment for a long time and is now afraid the biopsy was of the wrong place...

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Hi,

I recently had a breast biopsy performed and two of my three puncture sites are a similar distance away from the mass detected. The needles used are several centimetres in length which may determine how and where they are inserted. A diagram I looked at after my procedure displayed a biopsy needle being inserted through the breast at a specific angle, rather than closely to the desired area.

I just wanted to share this with you, although it may not be relevant.

Additionally, your partner could raise this question with his consultant when he receives his results.

  • Hi,

I had a few of these on my groin, mine were all ultrasound led though.  After all, where would they know where to stick the needle otherwise?  The doctors do tend to make a few different entry points to get the widest range of samples though.  It's probably nothing to worry about, but there's no harm in going back to the doctor and asking lots of questions!

I've written a fair bit about cancer and groin surgery on https://knob.blog if he's interested!

    Good luck,
