Hi there,
I found a lump on my left breast a couple of days ago that I could only describe as being huge. I felt baffled at how I hadn't noticed it before because of how big it was. So I went to a GP appointment today to have it examined. The doctor didn't notice any other symptoms of breast cancer, and I am 21 years old and she said it should only be a big concern if over 30. However she described the lump as being really big and "very obvious upon examination", she reckons it's about 2-3cm by the feel of it. She seems to think it's fibroadenoma, I asked her if that's a benign tumour and she said yes. I know this is also known as breast mice which I have gone to the GP for (very small) lumps before which I was simply told was breast mice and that was that, it didn't go as far as a referral and I know other women in my family have had lumps checked out before without going as far as a hospital referral.
So she has referred me to the breast clinic (listed as a not suspected cancer patient), however, she was still asking for my family history of breast cancer etc. So I'm a bit unsure of what to expect. She seemed worried about the size of it and said it may be likely that it needs to be removed either way. But surely if it's a tumour this means I'm being referred to the clinic to make sure it's not cancerous even if they're almost certain it's benign? Has anyone had a similar situation? Of course I'm still a bit worried, because it felt like I was being reassured that it isn't likely to be cancer so I'm a bit confused as to what this appointment will entail.
thank you!
