Brush biopsy for tongue?

I have a red patch on my tongue , sometimes bleeds if knocked with a toothbrush. I've had it for maybe 6 years or more. It's grown in size over the years and is now about 5mm x 4mm ish. A couple of dentists have seen it over time and both said it looks like nothing to worry about although the second dentist said he could refer me to be seen in hospital if I wished. I said yes. At the hospital appt I was told it was 'probably ok' but best to do a biopsy. I was offered a cancellation appt at quite short notice and after a quick google of the procedure , along with my severe anxiety and phobia of being in a 'trapped position' ie tongue clamped, I panicked and cancelled my appt.

i have just read that a brush biopsy is a thing, is this something that is available in the uk? I'm worried about my tongue but don't feel able to go through with a biopsy so hoping to find about about the brush procedure, thanks.

  • Hello Dandelion4

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some ongoing concerns about your tongue.

I'm afraid I don't have any information about the kind of biopsy that you've mentioned. I'd suggest getting back in touch with the dentist who originally referred you or speaking to your GP for more information.

I do hope that some is able to offer you some answers and reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,
