Is a PET scan only called for when they know it’s cancer?

Hello...where do I start. I'm so confused with the whirlwind that has been the past year and a bit.

Back in November 2019 my mother got taken to hospital for high blood pressure. They did some routine scans and after a  CT noticed she had a small shadow. They said she would need a PET scan.

As we got home from the hospital they called to say it wasn't necessary as they think the shadow is just old scarring, from an infection for example.

Fast forward to March 2020, another CT scan. Results come through saying all is well as everything still presents as scarring and a follow up scan in DEcember is all that was required.

December 2020 had the scan and now suddenly a PET scan is being ordered. Nobody has told us why and we are in full on panic mode, clearly.

Mother is in very good health and we can't understand why this is happening. Is it possible they're just ordering it to be double sure it's nothing sinister?

  • Hello Missconfused

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so worried about the additional scan that has been requested for your Mum. A PET scan is used to create 3D images so that the Consultants can see in more detail what is going on.  We have some information on our website here

It sounds really positive that whatever is going on that your Mum is in good health. If she is feeling worried about the scan then you could try giving her Consultant or the GP a call to ask for more information.

Alternatively, you're welcome to call our team of nurses who may be able to offer some information and support. If you'd like to speak to them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
