Gp not referring my father

Hi all,

My father is 56 and has been having rectal bleeding for around 6 weeks now. He's lost a huge amount of weight (9kg in one month). His eyes are sunk, hes very pale and yellow, in so much pain he cannot walk. His stomach hurts him to the point where he cannot drive and needs assistance. His GP has been absolutely useless. He claims that he cannot do an emergency referral because hospitals arent accepting them anymore due to covid?! He claims he needs to do all the tests at the GP and once that's been done he will get into contact with the hospital for a possible referral. Now hes had 2 blood tests, 4 stool samples and they are taking absolutely forever to come back. One of his blood tests came out normal (which is a good sign, i suppose) but still, with all his symptoms i believe he NEEDS an emergency colonoscopy! Its absurd how the NHS have stopped accepting referrals because of covid, leaving people to be in so much pain without answers and only treating coronavirus patients. What do we pay tax for?! I dont want to go on too much about the NHS but my father has another gp appointment tomorrow and I will be going with him. Also just to add, the first time my dad went to him, the gp gave him a suppository and because of it he was nonstop, heavily bleeding for days! He's healed now a bit from the suppository, of course still bleeding but not like before! What are some things i can say to the GP tomorrow to get an urgent referral? And what are your thoughts on this because I would really love to hear it! P.s we considered going private but a colonoscopy is £1800. Money we do not have right now because of the pandemic and we pay tax!! Why should we go private when we pay for the nhs and we expect a service in return?

  • Hi,

I completely understand your frustration.  I had a similar situation with my GP, and just kept applying the pressure until I got a referral.

I'm not sure how true it is that hospitals are refusing to accept referrals though.  It might just be the GP is shielding the hospitals because they're not urgently concerned about your father's condition.  Another route could be to use one of your local urgent care centres.  That's just a GP surgery in a small hospital setting, and they can refer on.

  • Hi Moniq1

I can understand your frustration. If it were my dad, I would ask the GP to refer for a colonoscopy/CT scan, if refused, I would ask for a second opinion, I would also write a letter to your local CCG to highlight the issue and see what they will do about it.

You could also write your dad's experience on care opinion www.careopinion.org.uk/

Hopefully, your GP will see sense tomorrow and will refer your dad. Good luck x

  • Hi Moniq1,

So sorry to hear you are going through this and sending well wishes to your father.

I have been going through a similar situation but where I had lumps in my neck and throat and been in a lot of pain and panicking that I can't breathe. Had many phone calls with a nurse until I finally got I see my GP who said it's anxiety or acid reflux. I didn't feel happy with that outcome (no blood tests or anything). Kept calling and going through so much stress just to be heard.

anyway long story short I found calling 111 for advice to be the best solution as they referred me to a GP in a walk in clinic who then sent a letter to my GP to urgently refer me for tests. This could be of some benifit to you just for another person to listen to what's going on etc I find 111 to be really understanding.

I hope all goes well and just keep pushing and don't let them fob you off!

    Take care
