I’m 25 and my first smear has come back abnormal

Hello,

I am 25, I had my first smear 3 weeks ago, the results come back today as abnormal, it states presence of high risk HPV and that on further analysis to the cells there has shown an abnormality known as high grade dyskaryosis (moderate). It sais that this diagnosis usually requires treatment and I've been booked straight in for a colposcopy on the 19th. I have awful anxiety (I have GAD) and I'm only 25 with a 2 year old and a 3 year old and I'm petrified! Can anyone share there experiences with similiar smear results and if the colposcopy is painful?

  • Hi,

Yes I had moderate changes and high risk hvp. I might give them a ring today and ask fingers crossed. Thanks for your reply

  • Last year I didn't but I've noticed some changes myself and that's why I asked to be referred for the colposcopy but i wasn't under an urgent referral. However with everything being cancelled (non urgent) and waiting months I've now had another smear and was told if there is any abnormal cells I would be under a 2 week urgent referral. Try not to worry too much as they will do this type of referral for anyone with abnormal cells, a lot of the time it comes back fine after a colposcopy so try not to worry. I know it must be horrible I've been bad enough worrying myself they will look after you x

  • Hi,

I called the doctor today, she said it looked like something is in the system for me on 15th of Jan, she said if I don't get my app over weekend call her on Tuesday to case up!. So don't worry it looks like I am the same on the fast track. I am a student mental health nurse away to start a new placement during lock down I am not sure I will beable to focus at all next week.

On a  possitive I spoke with 2 friends, both been through this. One of them had mod changes she got cells removed and they were classed as abnormal. The other severe changes and had to get part of cervix removed her cells were pre cancerous. Since then they have both had normal smears.

  • I am glad you've got some more answers on your appointment! Hopefully we will have success stories like your friends, I am trying to stay positive. Have you had any symptoms? I have bleeding between periods and after sex (I also bled after my smear)?

    april xx

  • Hi,

No iv had no bleeding between periods or after sex, however I have had recurring urine infections. My friend had pain during sex and some bleeding too. Fingers crossed for us. I had a moderate change 3 years ago but required no treatment, that was followed by a mild change 6 months later still no treatment then 6 months later it was normal! Now 2 years later it's moderate. Iv had to wait 1 year longer than planned for this swear due to covid so that's very frustrating.

    Fingers crossed for us

  • Hi.. I have had two colposcopys.. the first was after my first born.. I had abnormal cells removed. I myself didn't feel a thing during the process and a biopsy was taken. Afterwards I just had a dull ache nothing too painful.. my second one was last year and I had a lletz procedure done at the same time... the nurses were so kind and reassuring that it put me at ease....I have to go back in march for another check.. I've panicked a few times about it.. just try not to worry..

  • I'm glad to hear you didn't find it too bad and have positive outcomes from it, I have huge health anxiety so I really work myself up about it things like this, and although I have 2 children I still find anything internal painful but hoping it won't be too bad! Thank you for sharing your experience with me x
