Asbestos concern

Hi, I am really worried about a collapsed ceiling in our house which has been tested positive for asbestos in the artex. The ceiling collapsed due to water damage, there was a lot of dust and we were exposed to the open ceiling for around 4/5 weeks. This was then sanded down and plastered up and we had a deep clean done of the carpet to try and get rid of any fibers.

I am really worried about the potential harm this has done to my family and I, have we had significant exposure and are we at risk of developing cancer in the future? I have read many articles saying 'one fibre can kill' which has really increased my anxiety. Any replies will be greatly appreciated, thanks

  • Hello ro30,

If you are unsure you were exposed to asbestos or are worried about the exposure to this dust, I think it is advisable to contact your local council and speak to an asbestos officer who should be able to advise you further.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, short term exposure to asbestos will most likely have led to minimal exposure to fibres, and is very unlikely to have any long-term ill health effects. You can read more about this by clicking here

It's important to remember that most people have been exposed to low levels of asbestos, as it can be found in soil and air and yet few people become ill from it.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Lucie,

Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate it as I am still very worried about my exposure. I have talked to an asbestos company about my worries, they believe it is minimal but that I should go and talk to my GP if I am still worried. Would 4/5 weeks worth of exposure classify as short term? Thanks

  • Hi ro30,

As the asbestos company believes it is minimal, this would suggest that it could be classed as short-term. However if you feel you'd like further information to put your mind at ease then do try to speak to an asbestos officer as suggested by Lucie, or you can always give your GP a call.

    All the best,
