Overactive thyroid - radio iodine treatment

My partner is 74 and throughout his adult life has been treated for an overactive thyroid. Over 12 years ago he had radio iodine treatment where he swallowed a pill and that killed off the thyroid and is now inactive! He has subsequently taken thyroxine tablets to maintain his thyroid levels.

My concern is that over the last 3 weeks he has been spitting up blood in the mornings and now his throat is sounding hoarse. He has no lumps or problems swallowing,

The doctor has sent him for a CT scan that is looking at his thorax and abdomen as he had pains in his back initially.

My concern is could this be a reaction to the radio iodine he had previously and will the CT scan pick this up on the areas he is having scanned.

Any words of support will be appreciated!

  • Hello Elephant and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry about the symptoms your partner has been having lately but I'm glad tests are being carried out to find the cause.

Unfortunately our members can't really answer your questions about the CT scan but you're welcome to talk things through with our team of cancer nurses. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040 so do give them a call if you'd like to get their thoughts.

We're thinking of you Elephant and will have our fingers crossed for good news.

    All the best,
