Breast lump

I recently went to the doctors as I noticed that my breasts were getting quite tender I got an appointment yesterday he checked both brests he could feel a lump on left breast at 11oclock about 3cm and another and a smaller one in the right breast he has made urgent refural to breast clinic im 41 he told me I shouldn't panic he is sending me to rule cancer out but still can't help worring never had Issues with my breasts before

  • Hi,

I just wanted to reach out as I understand what it's like to worry about breast lumps - especially hard this time of year I think (especially this year).

I found a little lump a couple of years ago - absolutely floored me. The referral took a couple of weeks and the wait wasn't easy. It eventually turned out to be a fibroadenoma - apparently they are very common, as are cysts. Far more common than breast cancer.

I know there's nothing anyone can say that will make the time go by any quicker, I just wanted to reach out.

  • Hi Ladyvibez,

Welcome to our forum. I am glad to hear that you have acted quickly to get your breasts checked out. PLease don't paic about the 'urgent referral'. This is normal procedure for most of us. You are likely to have an ultrasound, possibly a mammogram and/or a biopsy. You will then have to wait a further 1-2 weeks to get the results of these tests.

I agree that it is scary waiting to be seen, but this is because our minds tend to go into overdrive immediately there is any mentin of cancer. Fortunately, only 1 person in every 8 referred will get a cancer diagnosis. Even then there are different types, grades and stages of the disease, so it doesn't all have to be doom and gloom. It is also worth remembering that not all lumps are cancerous.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 11 years and feel exactly like you every time i have to go for tests, but I am in remission at present, which shows that the treatments can work.

Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Here's hoping that nothing untoward is found.

    Kindest regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi thank you.for your reply I will keep you updated on what happens just  hope the appointments don't get held up over covid and would I be able to take my husband with me for my appointment during covid pandemic its a really scary thing to do on your own

  • Hiya, I'm in the same situation. I found a lump last week, went to gp on Tuesday and have been referred under 2 week rule. I'm 36 and have two young children and my husband is undergoing treatment for net bowel cancer at the moment. I can't really process it, it would be too awful for us both to have cancer, especially at this age, but I feel like it is a real possibility. Just awaiting call from breast clinic and expect everything to be delayed because of Christmas and Covid.

This is very hard, I very much hope it turns out positively. Trying not to over think things but it's hard!! Hope your appointment comes through soon x

  • Hi, I am in a similar situation. Found a lump in my left breast along with some tenderness. I went to GP on Wednesday and they have made a referral to the breast clinic. I've been told they will aim to see me within 2 weeks but with it being Christmas and covid might be longer. I'm 39 and have 2 children so trying to put a brave face on it for their sake. My husband keeps telling me he's sure it will be OK but tbh that's stressing me out more. Finding today harder than yesterday I thought about telling my mum but conscious of not wanting to ruin their Christmas more than covid has.

Fingers crossed for the clinc appointment letter to come through soon. X

  • Sorry to hear this. I've told my mum and a few friends in case it is bad news. I will need them to be prepared.

Thinking of you and ladyvibez2020. We just need to keep busy and stay positive. Everything that's happened with my husband in the last few months has kind of made me a bit better at that I think.

I will call The clinic on Monday I think to see how long I should be waiting on the appointment. X

  • Hey,

Im also waiting. Found a big lump on my left side. Hang in there xxx

  •

    Hi Clyd,

I'm so glad that it turned out to be a fibroadenoma in your case. I'm sure that this was a great relief for you.

    Kindest regards,

    LucyMariko,

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's cancer. I agree that it would really be a case of lightening striking twice if you too get a positive diagnosis, but you are young and there are a number of other reasons for a lump.

Here's hoping that your appointment comes through soon and that nothing untoward is found.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kindest regards,

    Hi Debvin and Somewhereoverth,

Welcome to our forum. I am so sorry that you both find yourselves in this unenviable situation. You are doing the right thing in getting your lumps investigated. Not all lumps are cancerous. There are a number of less worrying reasons for these.

I hope that you both get your appointments through soon and that nothing untoward is found. Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

I agree Debvin. Many of us get annoyed when relatives and friends try to reasure us that all will be fine. One fact to hold on to is that only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will be diagnosed with cancer.

My fingers are crossed for both of you.

    Kindest regards,

    Jolamine xx
